Superman
The Receiving End of Sirens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you
You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you

You look like Jesus on a aeroplane
Ya head's against the window pane
You got opinions but you ain't got news
You got good laughs but when it suits you
You turn it on like a leaking tap
And dripping dropping people drop of a hat
You gotta mouth but you ain't got guts
That drunken mouth you should keep it shut

You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you
You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you

Superman on an aeroplane
Sitting next to Lois Lane
You got that woman but you want her gone
So you can sleep with a teenage blonde
You wear a mask wear an armored suit
Can't get to you with the gun I shoot
You play your cards close to your chest because ya
Poker face is a dreary mess

You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you
You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you

You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you
You don't know what it's been like
Meeting someone like you [Repeat: x6]
Meeting someone like ah ah ah aah
Ooh

Superman on an aeroplane
Sitting next to Lois Lane
You got that woman but you want her gone
So you can sleep with a teenage blonde
You turn it on like a leaking tap
And dripping dropping people drop of a hat

You gotta mouth but you ain't got guts
That drunken mouth you should keep it shut

Overall Meaning

The song "Superman" by The Receiving End of Sirens can be interpreted as a commentary on the dangers of idolizing individuals who appear to be perfect, but are actually flawed and even immoral. The first verse describes the frustration of meeting someone who seems impressive on the surface, but ultimately falls short of expectations. The second verse uses the metaphor of Superman and Lois Lane to highlight the hypocrisy of a man who appears to be a hero but is actually pursuing his own selfish desires. The chorus reinforces the idea that the singer has had a difficult time dealing with this person and their behavior.

The use of Superman as a metaphor is significant because he is a symbol of heroism and morality. However, the song highlights the fact that even those who appear to be heroes can have dark impulses and engage in hurtful behavior. The repeated line "you don't know what it's been like meeting someone like you" emphasizes the confusion and disappointment the singer feels after realizing that someone they admired is not what they appeared to be.

Can we bring this back full force in 2020?

Lazy Bear

This is a fucking fantastic song. These guys are by far my favorite band. And I'm pretty sure this is the original and not a cover.

Mat Chavez

Ummmmm no, it's a Stereophonics song. Check out the original. It's different. I actually like this better. You probably will too

Garrett Glasscock

Shit, man, there’s something about high-concept bands like TREOS with this and Coheed with Deranged finding their way onto superhero soundtracks that wakes some shit up in me

burnthebarn911

@TReoS96 They actually got back together last year and wrote Weightless Underwater. Nate Patterson, until recently, played for Black Cards. Andrew Cook plays for A Rocket to the Moon now. Brian Southall played in Isles and Glaciers. Last I checked Brendan was spending a lot of his time focusing on his family and his son and Alex Bars was either doing something with college, bee farming, or both.

SelfBlumpkin

hah. I went to high school with Alex. Talent Show time was always fun with the projects he was involved in.
