It was said that producer Lelan Rogers suggested to drummer Rick Barthelme that he should take upon a more “tribal” beat as to fit in with the track’s militant tone and jungle-like nature.
The track foreshadows the Crayola’s more politically inclined lyrical side as well as Mayo Thompson’s passionate, unhinged and aggressive vocal lines. Here Thompson shouts out his sentiments against the Vietnam war as well as war in general. He’s so angry that his voice shakes, quivers, cracks and breaks all throughout – a way of self-expression that would take a whole decade before it’d become widely spread and commonplace through punk rock movement of the late 1970s.
Rick Barthelme recalled that in England they were considered a “proto-punk” band. He then added, “I don’t really know if that’s true, but wouldn’t it be lovely to think so?”

An American no-mother child at your breast
Your apple pie is just obviously best
But you have moved away out west
You know I cannot finish this, you know the rest
War sucks
Well listen to me my friend General Fox
I have something to say today, you know
I don't much to tell you my friend but
You may not like what I say
You know war sucks
Lindon, a good general he does weep
A-when he sends his troops into battle
I'm sick to death of your endless prattle
'Cause you remember what happened to Hanzel and Gretel
War sucks
America, America, god shed his grace on thee
And crown thou good with brotherhood
Sea to shining sea you know war sucks
You know war sucks
Well Mister God, are you a savage [?]
And we treat each other bad
You know your silence is part of a fad
You know that you do nothing just makes me mad
War sucks
War sucks

Grew up in CA late 60s. Saw turmoil about VN war and it was aweful.

@Mubtasik and red crayola also. This album is a masterpiece like the first of velvet, at the same level

Those were invented mostly by the velvet underground.
