Romeo And Juliet
The Reflections Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Ooh, ooh, oop)

Finding a job tomorrow morning
Got a little something I wanna do
Gonna buy (gonna buy) something I can ride in

A-take my girl datin' at the drive-in (take my girl)
Our love's gonna be written down in history
A-just like Romeo and Juliet

I'm gonna buy her pretty presents
Just like the ones in the catalog
Gonna show (gonna show) how much I lover her

Let her know that one way or the other (let her know)
Our love's gonna be written down in history
A-just like Romeo and Juliet

(Ooh, ooh, oop)
(Doo, doot, doot, doo-doop)

Just like Romeo and Juliet
A-just like Romeo and Juliet
A-just like Romeo and Juliet
Just like Romeo and Juliet

Talk about love and romance
Just wait 'til I get myself straight
I'm gonna put Romeo's fame right smack-dab on a date, ah

Alright now I'm speculatin'
Wonder what tomorrow's gonna really bring
Hey if I don't find work tomorrow
It's gonna be (gonna be) heartaches 'n' sorrow
Our love's gonna be destroyed like a tragedy
Just like Romeo and Juliet

(Ooh, ooh, oop)
(Doo, doot, doot, doo-doop)

Just like Romeo and Juliet
A-Just like Romeo and Juliet
A-Just like Romeo and Juliet

(Just like Romeo and Juliet)
(Just like Romeo and)

Overall Meaning

The Reflections’ song “Romeo & Juliet” is a sweet and hopeful love song that expresses a future vision for the relationship between the singer and his girlfriend. The song is about a young man who is looking for a job, and hoping to buy a car which he can take his girlfriend on dates with. The chorus repeats the line “Our love’s gonna be written down in history, just like Romeo and Juliet” - this communicates the sense of grandeur and timelessness that the young couple feels towards their love. The song is optimistic and romantic, expressing hope for a happy future for the couple.

The verses of the song are full of detail about the singer's plans for their future. He describes wanting to buy his girlfriend presents from the catalog, and wanting to show her how much he loves her. The feeling of grandeur is tangible throughout, with the lines "Our love's gonna be written down in history" underlining the fact that the singer is thinking beyond the present and towards the future. The bridge of the song takes a more introspective turn, with the singer questioning what the future holds for him and his girlfriend. He speculates on what tomorrow will bring, and worries that if he can't find work it might all fall apart. Despite these feelings of anxiety, the overriding feeling in the song is one of excitement and hope for what the future holds.

@adrianjohnson8103

This song is from 1964, yet it sounds so much better than the garbage we have today that passes for music.

@utbob2010

Everytime I hear this song it takes me back to a very warm spring day heading down the 101 in a 1957 Thunderbird with the top down.
It was my brother's girlfriend's car, and we were heading over to Malibu for some sun, surf and fun.
It's been close to 59 years, and I still remember that wonderful day listening to this wonderful song.
Thank you so much!
