Constantinople
The Residents Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I come Constantinople [Repeat: x1]
I am coming Constantinople
Here I come
All the leaves are off of the oak and
All of the sheep have followed the spoken
Word. I'm coming Constantinople
Here I come
So I stand out in the open
All my friends are with you I hope and
pray. I'm coming Constantinople
Here I come.
Here I come Constantinople [Repeat: x1]

I am coming Constantinople
Here I come

Overall Meaning

The song "Constantinople" by The Residents is a haunting and surreal piece about the ancient city that was formerly known as Byzantium and later as Istanbul. The lyrics seem to be describing a journey to the city, as the singer announces "Here I come Constantinople" repeatedly throughout the song. The imagery used in the song is surreal and somewhat disjointed, with lines such as "All the leaves are off of the oak" and "All of the sheep have followed the spoken word". These lines could be interpreted in many ways, but they seem to suggest a sense of emptiness or abandonment in the landscape that is being traveled through.

The mood of the song is eerie and atmospheric, with the singer's voice echoing through the emptiness of the imagined landscape. The repeated use of the phrase "Here I come" gives a sense of inevitability to the journey, as if the singer is drawn inexorably toward Constantinople despite whatever obstacles or challenges might arise. The overall effect is unsettling and mysterious, suggesting that there is something both ominous and alluring about this ancient city.

The fact that this is probably the most radio friendly/commercial song the Residents have tells you all you need to know about the band

The Residents are genius. Their album Duck Stab was made in 1978 but it sounds like an experimental album of today.

@bcampbell12095

Finally listened to that album in its entirety today. After being into primus, Mr bungle and Ween for so long im ashamed I didn't listen sooner

@cantskateswitchlikethat
