I Left My Heart in San Francisco
The Residents Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,
above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
your golden sun will shine for me!

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,

above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,

Overall Meaning

your golden sun will shine for me.

The lyrics to The Residents' version of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" are a playful and ironic take on the classic Tony Bennett song. The original lyrics evoke a nostalgic longing for San Francisco, with its iconic hills, cable cars, and foggy mornings. The Residents' version, on the other hand, seems to be poking fun at this sentimentality, while also embracing it in their own unique way.

The opening line, "I left my heart in San Francisco," is a classic refrain that suggests a deep emotional attachment to the city. However, the Residents' version subverts this cliché by inserting it into a strange and surreal context. The line is repeated throughout the song, almost like a mantra, but its meaning is never entirely clear. Is it a genuine expression of love for the city, or a tongue-in-cheek reference to the song's iconic status?

The rest of the lyrics are similarly irreverent, with references to the "little cable cars" that "climb halfway to the stars" and the "blue and windy sea" that surrounds San Francisco. The overall effect is one of playful absurdity, but there's also a sense of affection and admiration for this quirky, beloved city.

It'd be cool to have this as a single on vinyl.

Doug Brian

It was certainly not part of the original "Eskimo". It may have been incorporated with Eskimo on some later compilation. It was released on the vinyl LP Subterranean Modern, SM7908, 1979,. with other Ralph groups Chrome, MX-80 Sound, and Tuxedomoon, each of whom did a little version of "San Francisco".

I had it on an album where artists on Ralph Records each did a version of this song. Plus two more songs, I think. Tuxedo Moon w.as on the album, I think
