The Baby King Part 5
The Residents Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The baby became a king,
and for one real shining moment he was happy,
because kings were good and kings were strong and he was the king

(Girl)
He was the king?

(Narrator)
Yeah
But then the stranger's path got darker and darker,
and the baby lost his way. And the baby got old,
and the baby got fat,
and the baby didn't like himself too much anymore. And then he died

(Boy)
From life?

(Narrator)
Yeah, but have to never forget,
we have to never forget, that he was a baby. And babies are good.

(Boy)
How sad

(Narrator)
And babies are strong.

(Girl)
Sad.

(Narrator)
And babies are the best at everything

(Boy)
That was sad.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Residents's song The Baby King Part 5 depict the downfall of a baby who becomes a king. At first, the baby is happy because he believes that kings are good and strong, but as he gets older, his life takes a dark turn. He loses his way and becomes unhappy with himself. Eventually, the baby dies, leaving a somber tone to the song. However, the singer reminds us that we should not forget that the baby was once good and strong, and in the end, babies are the best at everything.

The song's lyrics can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Some may see it as a metaphor for how those in positions of power can become corrupt and lose their way. Others may view it as a commentary on the fleeting nature of life and how we should appreciate the innocence and purity of childhood. Overall, the song evokes a sense of melancholy and reflection.

How does this get so few views? What a masterpiece!

I don't think this album did well overall, for many people it was heinous to call Elvis evil -  even though we all made fun of the fat Vegas Elvis. The real evil are the people in the music business that push these people to be what they think we want, it's hard to make fun of them though.
