Pretty Photograph
The Revivalists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

We broke out the hounds
Track them down, track them down, track them down
And lock them up pound for pound
Eye for an eye I've come to know
In the city the city of sound

But timeless is how long you'll sing
When you're not with the one in your dreams
She sends her love for me to see
A pretty photograph to my telephone screen

Well I really don't know what time will tell
I never grew up I've never been in jail
I've seen the inside of a cinder block cell
With eyes rolled back in head oh well
It's been a long time coming I'm proud to say
I know what it takes to greet a sunny day
You keep on pushing those clouds away
While your knocking on wood every goddamn day, every day

'Cause timeless is how long you'll sing
When you're not with the one in your dreams
She sends her love for me to see
A pretty photograph to my telephone screen

I really don't know what time will tell
I never grew up I've never been in jail
I've seen the inside of a cinder block cell
With eyes rolled back in head oh well
It's been a long time coming, I'm proud to say
I know what it takes to greet a sunny day
You keep on pushing those clouds away

While your knocking on wood every god damn day, every day, every god damn day
Timeless is

Overall Meaning

a recurring theme in The Revivalists' song, Pretty Photograph. The opening lines of the song, "We broke out the hounds, track them down, track them down, track them down, and lock them up pound for pound," portrays the image of someone who is seeking justice and retribution for wrongdoings that have been done to them. The "eye for an eye" mentality is also evident in these lines, suggesting a form of retribution, which is a common theme in many popular songs.

The next lines, "But timeless is how long you'll sing, when you're not with the one in your dreams," is a significant contrast with the previous lines. Here, the singer acknowledges that there are more important things in life than seeking revenge. The word "timeless" highlights the importance of memories, and how they can linger long after people have left our lives. The singer is suggesting that memory and the feeling of having loved ones in their life are more important than any form of revenge or punishment for a wrongdoing.

The song continues with the refrain, "She sends her love for me to see, a pretty photograph to my telephone screen." The singer finds comfort and solace in a photograph of someone they love. It portrays how pictures can hold immense value and have the power to evoke many emotions. The song's verses subtly showcase how the singer has gone through a lot in life, including being in a cinder block cell with rolled-back eyes. Still, he has learned how to keep pushing and greet every day with open arms, knocking on wood for good luck.

They are incredible - sadly I seen them at Voodoo, wish it was more intimate cause they have such an amazing energy together.
I really do hope that Shaw continues to make music with the band, would be a shame to lose the Revivalists to solo ambitions.
Granted though, his Solo singles are good - but my soul will cry if I miss the opportunity to see them all preform again, once Covid fucks off.
