With bassist Richard Cousins, keyboardist Peter Boe and drummer Tom Murphy, they launched The Robert Cray Band in 1980 with "Who's Been Talkin". The album was recorded during constant touring in the U.S. in 1978. The record was initially shelved for two years, being eventually issued by the short-lived Tomato label (whose licence was picked up by "Atlantic Records" (U.S.) and "Charly" in the UK.
After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury in 1982. It was the connection with the producing and songwriting team of Bruce Bromberg and Dennis Walker at Hightone that helped to create the mold-breaking music of "Bad Influence" (1983) and "False Accusations" (1985).
In 1984, The Robert Cray Band completed their first European tour to critical acclaim. Cray's participation with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland on "Showdown!" (1985, Alligator) and the 1986 album release, "Strong Persuader", again produced by Walker, both received Grammy Awards, while the crossover single "Smoking Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition. During 1986 Cray played 170 concerts, including his seventh European tour since 1984, building on his increasing reputation in the UK.
The Robert Cray Band's next album "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (1988) was recorded in Los Angeles, California, and featured David Sanborn on guest saxophone. The title song from the album won Cray his third Grammy, and he guested on Eric Clapton's "Journeyman", whilst also being on the bill at Clapton's eighteen show marathon at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 1991 Cray was selected to present Howlin' Wolf's induction trophy to Wolf's widow, Lilly Burnett, at the sixth annual "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" Awards. Later that year Cray took part in the "Newport Jazz Festival" with B. B. King and John Lee Hooker.

And every one loves her
A warm smile and a friendly hug
Good looks, good looks
Everyone says it's a mistake
That she's made a goof
Anything can happen 'cause she's here with me
I could be a cowboy
Sit out under western stars
I could be a guru
Go to India and seek the truth
Everyone says it's a mistake
That she's made a goof
But anything can happen 'cause she's here with me
For that I'm living proof
Anything can happen 'cause she's here with me
For that I'm living proof
Someday she'll leave me
That's what they say
But I just shake my head
'Cause I know she's gonna stay
A room with a view and fresh-cut flowers
Something nice to eat
These things are important
Now when you find a girl you wanna meet
It may be a mistake
Maybe I'm a goof
But anything can happen 'cause she's here with me
For that I'm living proof
Anything can happen, look she's here with me
For that I'm living proof
The Robert Cray Band's "Living Proof" is a love song about a man who is grateful for the presence of a woman who is everything he could ever want. The woman is described as perfect in every sense, with a warm smile, friendly nature, and great looks that make everyone love her. Despite this, many people consider it a mistake for the woman to be with the man. However, he believes that anything can happen now that she is with him, and he is living proof of this.
The song's lyrics suggest that the singer is reflective, grateful, and self-aware of his good fortune, stating that he could be doing anything in life, such as being a cowboy or a guru, but he chooses to be with the woman he loves. The singer knows that the relationship may not last forever, but he is still determined to enjoy every moment with the woman. The song's mood is both romantic and self-reflective, touching on the fragility of love and the fleeting nature of life.
Overall, "Living Proof" is a beautiful song about the power of love to make life worth living, regardless of any hardships that may come along the way. The song's message of hope and perseverance is a powerful reminder of the importance of appreciating the people in our lives who make it special.
