With ba… Read Full Bio ↴Robert Cray is an American blues guitarist, composer and singer.
With bassist Richard Cousins, keyboardist Peter Boe and drummer Tom Murphy, they launched The Robert Cray Band in 1980 with "Who's Been Talkin". The album was recorded during constant touring in the U.S. in 1978. The record was initially shelved for two years, being eventually issued by the short-lived Tomato label (whose licence was picked up by "Atlantic Records" (U.S.) and "Charly" in the UK.
After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury in 1982. It was the connection with the producing and songwriting team of Bruce Bromberg and Dennis Walker at Hightone that helped to create the mold-breaking music of "Bad Influence" (1983) and "False Accusations" (1985).
In 1984, The Robert Cray Band completed their first European tour to critical acclaim. Cray's participation with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland on "Showdown!" (1985, Alligator) and the 1986 album release, "Strong Persuader", again produced by Walker, both received Grammy Awards, while the crossover single "Smoking Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition. During 1986 Cray played 170 concerts, including his seventh European tour since 1984, building on his increasing reputation in the UK.
The Robert Cray Band's next album "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (1988) was recorded in Los Angeles, California, and featured David Sanborn on guest saxophone. The title song from the album won Cray his third Grammy, and he guested on Eric Clapton's "Journeyman", whilst also being on the bill at Clapton's eighteen show marathon at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 1991 Cray was selected to present Howlin' Wolf's induction trophy to Wolf's widow, Lilly Burnett, at the sixth annual "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" Awards. Later that year Cray took part in the "Newport Jazz Festival" with B. B. King and John Lee Hooker.
Cray issued his following records under his own name, Robert Cray

I was talkin to my neighbour, that lives next door
who marveled at your pace as you went walking thru the store
I said hey up baby, and come right back
you know she brought me a meal cos I didn't want a snack
that's what, keeps me rockin'
that's what, keeps me rockin' it
that's what keeps me keepin on
She's got, smooth long legs, curly red hair
when I look into her eyes, that you would never dare
when I see that sunlight, shining thru your dress
you know I, I transform into a hell of a mess
chorus
solo
yes she's my fine fine baby
you know that its true
and I'm a lucky son of a gun
she's never gonna leave me, no matter what I do
cos we ain't got nothin' but fun
I wanna tell everybody, bout this poor boys dream
don't be surprised if things are better than they seem
yes I'm Mr lucky put your mind at ease
when I need a little lovin' I don't have to say please
chorus
The Robert Cray Band's "That's What Keeps Me Rockin'" is a bluesy rock song that is all about the singer's love for his girlfriend. In the first verse, he talks about how his neighbor is amazed at his girlfriend's pace as they walk through the store. He then tells her to come back, and she surprises him with a meal. The chorus emphasizes the things that keep him going: his love for his girlfriend.
The second verse describes the physical attributes of the girlfriend that make the singer fall for her - her long legs, curly red hair, and the look in her eyes. He also describes how he is transformed into a "hell of a mess" when he sees the sunlight shining through her dress. The chorus repeats once again, with the lyrics emphasizing his girlfriend's importance in his life.
The final verse talks about how the singer is lucky to have his girlfriend, and he knows that she will never leave him because they have so much fun together. He encourages others to believe that good things can happen if they have a positive outlook, and he knows that he is lucky to have his girlfriend without having to ask for love or affection.
Overall, "That's What Keeps Me Rockin'" is a jubilant rock song that celebrates love and the joy it brings. It highlights the importance of having a positive outlook in life and cherishing the people you love.
