They had previously been known since 1947 as “The Bluebirds.” The best known recording from the Robins was “Smokey Joe’s Café.” If It’s So Baby was another top 10 R&B hit from the group.

The original group members were Ty Terrell, Billy Richards, Roy Richards, and Bobby Nunn. Carl Gardner and Grady Chapman were added in 1954. In 1956, Garner and Nunn left and formed The Coasters.

The Robins were NOT aka the Coasters. One third of the Robins left and became one half of the Coasters. The Robins were formed by Ty Terrell and the Richards brothers in 1949, when they added bass Bobby Nunn to what had been the A-Sharp Trio. Over the course of their existence, they would grow to a quintet, with the addition of lead singer Grady Chapman, and his replacement when he was incarcerated for a time, Carl Gardner. When Chapman was again available, they became a sextet. They recorded a number of songs written by Leiber and Stoller, and in late 54, signed with that duo's Spark Records. In late 55, fueled by the success of "Smokey Joe's Cafe," Leiber and Stoller signed a deal with Atlantic to dissolve Spark and move to NY to work for Atlantic. They were supposed to take the Robins with them, but the Robins didn't want to go. And since Ty Terrell had trademaked the name, Atlantic/Leber and Stoller were left with the task of putting together a new group AND coming up with a new name. Only Bobby Nunn and Carl Gardner left the group to join Leiber & Stoller at Atlantic. L&S hired Billy Guy and Leon Hughes to sing with Nunn and Gardner, and that group became the Coasters. The Robins became a quintet again when they replaced Nunn with HB Barnum and continued to perform and to record for various west coast labels until 1961.
