Somebody's Watching Me
The Rockwells Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who's watching?
Tell me, who's watching?
Who's watching me?

I'm just an average man with an average life
I work from nine to five, hey, hell, I pay the price
All I want is to be left alone in my average home
But why do I always feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone and?

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Tell me is it just a dream?

When I come home at night
I bolt the door real tight
People call me on the phone, I'm trying to avoid
But can the people on TV see me or am I just paranoid?
When I'm in the shower, I'm afraid to wash my hair
'Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there
People say I'm crazy, just a little touched
But maybe showers remind me of Psycho too much
That's why

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Who's playing tricks on me?

(Who's watching me?)
I don't know anymore
Are the neighbors watching me? (Who's watching?)
Well, is the mailman watching me? (Tell me, who's watching?)
And I don't feel safe anymore, oh, what a mess
I wonder who's watching me now (who?), the IRS?

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Tell me is it just a dream?

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Who's playing tricks on me?
(Who's watching?)

(Oh, oh)

(Who's watching me?)
I always feel like somebody's watching me (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
(Who's watching me?)
I always feel like somebody's watching me (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
(Who's watching me?)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
I can't enjoy my tea
(Who's watching me?)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Can I have my privacy? (Oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Who's watching me?
(Who's watching me?)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
(Oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Stop playing tricks on me
(Who's watching me?)
I always feel like somebody's watching me

Why don't they leave me be? (Oh, oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me

Overall Meaning

The Rockwell's song "Somebody's Watching Me" is a reflection of the paranoia and detachment that can develop in modern society, exploring the feeling that someone is constantly watching and monitoring our every move. The song's paranoid tone is amplified by Rockwell's verses that describe his everyday life, where he seeks privacy in his own home but feels watched everywhere he goes. He questions who might be watching and playing tricks on him, with references to the IRS, shower scenes from the film "Psycho", and even wondering if his neighbors and the mailman are tracking his every move. The chorus then repeats the idea that he always feels like he is being watched and has no privacy.

The lyrics can be interpreted as a critique of increasing government surveillance, suspicion of technology and social media monitoring, and a general sense of disconnection and paranoia felt by many in modern society. Rockwell even goes so far as to question whether he is simply paranoid, and whether it is all just a dream. Ultimately, the song leaves the listener with a haunting sense of uncertainty and the feeling that they too might be constantly monitored and watched.

Fun Fact: Michael denied his involvement in this song for YEARS since he was at the peak of his career and didn't want to hog all the limelight from Rockwell. That's why he doesn't appear in the music video or have his name mentioned in ANY of the song's titles or credits. He wanted it kept secret so Rockwell's career could take off. This song became a hit of Rockwell's and MJ didn't take a single ounce of credit for it. Absolute respect for MJ
