Time Will Tell
The Rohan Theatre Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met her in the Horse and Cart,
She offered me her fragile heart,
She swore she knew that we'd never part,
She didn’t know me well.

We thought we'd made our dreams come true,
To lead our lives as others do,
Well life's a bitch and so were you,
I've learnt my lesson well.

Time will tell,
Oh time will time,
Oh time will show you all,
I may be mad and I may be drunk,
But I've seen it all before,
You know you're right you’ve seen the light,
But you're heading for a fall,
Oh time will tell,
Oh yes time will tell,
Time will show you all.

You think it's' come together now,
Your satisfaction knows no bounds,
You're chickens have all learned to count and say "I told you so",
Before you know you'll hit the ground,
Your fairy-tale will tumble down,
There’ll be no one left to paint the town,
You're out there on your own.

Time will tell,
Oh time will time,
Oh time will show you all,
I may be mad and I may be drunk,
But I've seen it all before,
You know you're right you’ve seen the light,
But you're heading for a fall,
Oh time will tell,
Oh yes time will tell,
Time will show you all.

Young Jesus walked among us all,
To cleanse the sins that mark our souls,
And now were good and happy folk,
It said so on TV,
All enemies are ostracised,
And everyone is satisfied,
With justice walking at our side,
We know that we are free.

Time will tell,
Oh time will time,
Oh time will show you all,
I may be mad and I may be drunk,
But I've seen it all before,
You know you're right you’ve seen the light,
But you're heading for a fall,
Oh time will tell,

Oh yes time will tell,
Time will show you all.

Overall Meaning

The Rohan Theatre Band's song "Time Will Tell" is about the deceptive nature of life and the consequences of taking things for granted. The singer meets a woman in the Horse and Cart bar and they start a relationship quickly, but she doesn't really know him. They think they've made their dreams come true and lead a life like everyone else, but the reality of life hits them hard. The chorus repeats the phrase "time will tell" indicating that the future is unpredictable and uncertain. The singer acknowledges that he may be "mad and drunk," but he has seen the patterns of life before and the same mistakes being made over and over again.

The second verse warns against being complacent and feeling like things have come together, because the universe has its own plans. The phrase, "you're chickens have all learned to count" is an expression that means things have become so predictable and routine that even animals could figure it out. The fairy tale will eventually crumble, leaving the people to paint their own town. The final verse mentions a biblical reference to Jesus cleansing sin, but the world is still marked by imperfection. The media tries to convince people that everything is good and everyone is happy, but the reality is more complex. The chorus repeats the phrase "time will tell" indicating that people cannot predict the future, and that our current situation is not necessarily what the future holds.
