Sleepy City
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walkin' the sleepy city
In the dark it looks so pretty
Till I got to the one cafe
That stays open night and day

Just a lookin' at the sleepy city
In the night it looks so pretty
No one sees the city lights
they just care about the warmth inside

No one listens to what people say
I just sit and hear the radio play
Just then this girl walked in my way
And she was as pretty as my sleepy city

Will you walk through the sleepy city
In the night it looks so pretty
Tired of walkin' on my own
It looks better when you're not alone

Will you walk through the sleepy city
In the night it looks so pretty
I'm tired of walkin' on my own
It looks better when you're not alone

Mm mm mm mm mm mm
La la la la la la
La la la la la la la la

Will you walk through the sleepy city
In the night, well it looks so pretty
I'm tired of walkin' on my own
It looks better when you're not alone

Come on walk through that sleepy city
I said in the night it looks so pretty

I'm tired of walkin' that park on my own
It looks better when you're not alone

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stone's song "Sleepy City" captures the singer's experience of walking through a quiet and deserted city at night, until he stumbles upon a cafe that remains open throughout the night. He describes how the city, in the dark, is beautiful, but no one notices the city lights, and instead, people are more focused on the warmth inside the cafe. The singer is isolated in his walk and is tired of walking alone. However, as soon as he comes across a beautiful girl, he invites her to walk with him through the city.

The song perfectly captures feelings of loneliness and the universal search for a human connection. The sleepy city is symbolic of the singer's weary soul and the hopeful encounter with a beautiful girl inspires him to seek companionship. The lyrics act as a metaphor for human relationships, where one may feel isolated and disconnected from the outside world, but one encounter with a meaningful relationship can lead to a brighter outlook.

Overall, Sleepy City beautifully captures the search for human connection, the feelings of isolation, and the hope for finding meaning in life.

Aaaahhh... Those passageways, marvelous alleys... they seem to come out of 'Face To Face' and 'Something Else'... authentic odes to London in the 60's. A very good attempt to emulate the wonderful sepia vignettes that Ray Davies bestowed on us during the Kinks' epiphanic 1965-69 period.

@tomartstone

One of my all time fav Stones songs....Such a reminder of when I visited Liverpool during the Navy in the early 60's.
