Child of the Moon
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wind blows, rain into my face
The sun glows at the end of the highway
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Oh, child of the moon
Give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile

She shivers, by the light she is hidden
She flickers like a lamp lady vision
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Child of the moon
Give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile

The first car on the foggy road riding
The last star for my lady is pining
Oh, child of the moon, bid the sun arise
Oh, child of the moon

Give me a misty day, pearly gray, silver, silky faced
Wide-awake crescent-shaped smile

Overall Meaning

"Child of the Moon" by The Rolling Stones is a psychedelic rock song that reflects the mood and atmosphere of the late 1960s. The song deals with the theme of transformation and the duality of human nature. The lyrics talk about a person who is both a child of the moon and the sun, indicating the balancing of opposites within oneself.

The opening lines of the song describe the elemental forces of nature. The wind blows, the rain stings, and the sun glows. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing, a search for something beyond the mundane world. The child of the moon is asked to "rub your rainy eyes" and "give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile," suggesting a yearning for enlightenment or spiritual awakening.

The second stanza of the song refers to a woman who is shy and elusive. She is compared to a flickering lamp, a vision that is hard to pin down. The child of the moon is again called upon to give a smile that is both knowing and innocent, suggesting a blending of the rational and intuitive minds.

The final stanza of the song brings in the idea of travel and movement. The first car on a foggy road and the last star shining for the lady reveal a sense of distance and longing. The child of the moon is once again praised for their ability to see beyond the ordinary world and create a sublime experience out of it. The song ends with a request for a misty day, pearly gray, silver, silky-faced, wide-awake, crescent-shaped smile, invoking a sense of beauty and transcendence.

Child of the moon - Enfant de la lune
(Jagger & Richards)

Their psychedelic music from the 60s is awesome……no one seems to recognize this period from the Stones.
