The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I warned you baby from time to time
You don't listen so pay me no mind
About movin' on
Yeah I'm a moving on
I'm through with you
Too bad you're blue
I'll move on
Mister engineer with your throttle in hand
Take me back to that Southern land
It called moving
Keep a rolling on
You're flying too high
For my old sky
I'll move on

Mister Fireman please woncha listen to me
I got a woman in Tennessee
Keep on moving
Keep a rolling on
You're flying too high
It's all over now
I move on

Yes I'm gonna move (yes I'm moving)
I'm gonna move (yes I'm moving)
Said I'm gonna move (yes I'm moving)
Gotta go home (yes I'm moving)
(Yes I'm moving) I gotta go home
(Yes I'm moving) I gotta go home
Well tell ya (Yes I'm gonna move)
I, I, I, I going home (yes I'm moving)
I, I, I, I going home (yes I'm moving)
I, I, I, I going home (Yes I'm moving)
I've gotta go home (yes I'm moving)
I've gotta go baby
I gotta keep rolling
And I'm gonna move
(Yes I'm moving) I said I'm gonna move baby

I said goin' home (yes I'm moving)
I'm going home darling

Overall Meaning

In The Rolling Stones' I'm Moving On, the singer speaks to a person whom they have warned multiple times before. The addressee of the song never paid attention to the warnings and therefore, has to deal with the consequences. The singer is moving on, leaving the person behind. The chorus, "Yes I'm a moving on/I'll be through with you," is a clear signal that the relationship has ended. The phrase "I'm through with you" shows that the singer has had enough of the relationship, and there's no looking back, no more chances given.

However, the meaning of the song is not all about moving on from a challenging relationship. The verses are packed with metaphors from the world of trains, a frequent theme in early rock-n-roll. "Mister Engineer with your throttle in hand/Take me back to that Southern land" describes a desire to return to the singer's home, which is in the southern part of America. The "Southern land" could be a metaphor for a simpler and happier time in life. Nevertheless, in the next verse, the singer sends a message to "Mister Fireman" regarding a woman he left behind in Tennessee. This contradictory phrase demonstrates how there is still a sense of longing to go back, but the need to move forward and pursue other possibilities.

They’re really on fire here! Brian on lead.

Brian always played the slide guitar parts. It's what got him the recognition early.
