IMAGINATION
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look out my window and watch her as she passes by
I said to myself I'm such a lucky guy
To have a girl like her it's a dream come true
And of all the girls in New York she loves me true

It was just my imagination, once again
Running away with me
It was just my imagination
Running away with me

Soon you and me will be married and raise a family
Two boys for you, what about two girls for me
I tell you that I, I am just a fellow with a one track mind
Whatever it is I want baby I seek and I shall find
I'll tell ya

It was just my imagination, once again
Running away with me
It was just my imagination
Running away with me

Every night I hope and pray
Dear Lord, hear my plea
Don't ever let another take her love from me
Or I will surely die

Her love is ecstasy
When her arms enfold me
I hear her tender rhapsody
But in reality, she doesn't even know me

It was just my imagination
Running away with me
It was just my imagination
Running away with me

It was just my imagination, once again
Running away with me
It was just my imagination
Running away with me

It was just my imagination, once again
Running away with me

It was just my imagination
Running away with me

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones' "Imagination" is a song about a man who is in love with a woman that he sees passing by his window every day. He is grateful for her love and considers himself to be lucky to have her. He imagines a future with her, getting married and having children. He admits to having a one-track mind and being determined to get whatever he wants. He pleads with the Lord to keep her love for him and not let anyone else take it away.

However, he acknowledges that it's all just his imagination running away with him. He mentions this several times throughout the song, reminding himself that the future he envisions may not be a reality. He describes her love as ecstasy when she holds him, but realizes that in reality, she doesn't even know him.

The song conveys the bittersweet feeling of having a vivid imagination that can create wonderful scenarios that may not come to pass. It also highlights the human tendency to hope and pray for things to go our way, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Ultimately, it's a song about the power of imagination and the pain of unrequited love.

OMG, I was at this show!! My yonger brother and I went together. 5 rows from the front at the Will Rogers Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. They played the entire Some Girls album from start to finish. I couldn't believe it. KZEW announced the ticket sale and I hauled a_ _ to Ticketmaster in Preston Center in Dallas and scored the best tickets to the best rock show of my life! I can't believe I'm just now finding this video but I'm glad I did because it sure does bring back a lot of memories. Thank you for reading my rave.

I lived 38 years before I heard this version.
I feel I wasted all this time.
Who doesn't feel the energy of this song is already dead.

Laughably, the YT channel, MOJO, puts Jagger at #3, Mercury at #2, and Plant at #1. Frankly, I can't watch Mercury's gay prancing for more than five seconds. And, what, exactly, did Plant do besides thrust his hips and flip his hair?

@takushful

@@rhymeswithteeth Laughable, I agree. Plant and Mercury would also be the first to agree that the greatest front man on the planet of all time is Mick Jagger. Nobody comes close to emulating him.

@oopsiesbrother

@@takushful Jim Morrison would like to have a chat.
