In Another Land
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In another land where the breeze and the
Trees and flowers were blue
I stood and held your hand.
And the grass grew high and the feathers floated by
I stood and held your hand.
And nobody else's hand will ever do
Nobody else will do
Then I awoke
Was this some kind of joke
Much to my surprise
I opened my eyes.

We walked across the sand and the sea and
The sky and the castles were blue.
I stood and held your hand.
And the spray flew high and the feathers floated by
I stood and held your hand.
And nobody else's hand will ever do
Nobody else will do
Then I awoke
Was this some kind of joke
Much to my surprise
When I opened my eyes.

We heard the trumpets blow and the sky
Turned red when I accidentally said
That I didn't know how I came to be here
Not fast asleep in bed.
I stood and held your hand.
And nobody else's hand will ever do
Nobody else's hand
Then I awoke
Was this some kind of joke

I opened my eyes.
Much to my surprise.

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones' song "In Another Land" is a surrealistic journey through a dreamlike landscape where the singer finds himself standing with his loved one in a mystical location where everything is blue, from the breeze and trees to the flowers and castles. In this place, the two are holding hands, and nothing else matters. Feathers and grass float by as the singer realizes that nobody else's hand will ever do. However, as the dream progresses, the singer struggles to understand how he ended up in this place, until the dream abruptly ends, and he wakes up.

The lyrics of the song take the listener on a journey into a dream state where nothing is as it seems. The use of color and imagery to create a mystical and absurd world is a metaphor for the uncertainty and unpredictability of life. The notion that the singer doesn't know how he came to be in this place could be a reflection of the feeling that everything in life is out of his control.

Overall, "In Another Land" is a poetic journey into a dreamlike state that leaves the listener with more questions than answers. The use of surrealistic imagery and colorful language creates a vivid picture of a world that is both fantastical and unsettling, leaving the listener to wonder what the song is really about.

Bill Wyman has to be the most overlooked talent of The 5 original Rolling Stones. This is really a nice song. It's a shame his talents were not featured more.

@NilezII

His talents weren't featured more because he didn't have much support from Mick and Keith. You aren't born knowing how to write songs, unless you are exceptionally talented, and will probably need help through your Rubbish Phase (not this song). That he knocked it out by himself is commendable.

Wyman = Genius..........Jagger=Genital Wart
