Rooted in blues and early rock and roll, the Rolling Stones started out playing covers and were at the forefront of the British Invasion in 1964, becoming identified with the youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s. They then found greater success with their own material, as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (1965), "Get Off of My Cloud" (1965), and "Paint It Black" (1966) became international number-one hits. Aftermath (1966) – their first entirely original album – is considered by The Daily Telegraph to be the most important of their formative records. In 1967, they had the double-sided hit "Ruby Tuesday"/"Let's Spend the Night Together" and experimented with psychedelic rock on Their Satanic Majesties Request. They returned to their rhythm and blues roots with hit songs such as "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (1968) and "Honky Tonk Women" (1969), and albums such as Beggars Banquet (1968), featuring "Sympathy for the Devil", and Let It Bleed (1969), featuring "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Gimme Shelter". Let It Bleed was the first of five consecutive number-one albums in the UK.
Jones left the band shortly before his death in 1969, having been replaced by guitarist Mick Taylor. That year they were first introduced on stage as "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World". Sticky Fingers (1971), which yielded "Brown Sugar" and included the first usage of their tongue and lips logo, was their first of eight consecutive number-one studio albums in the US. Exile on Main St. (1972), featuring "Tumbling Dice", and Goats Head Soup (1973), yielding the hit ballad "Angie", were also best sellers. Taylor was replaced by Ron Wood in 1974. The band continued to release successful albums, including their two largest sellers: Some Girls (1978), featuring "Miss You", and Tattoo You (1981), featuring "Start Me Up". Steel Wheels (1989) was widely considered a comeback album and was followed by Voodoo Lounge (1994), a worldwide number-one album. Both releases were promoted by large stadium and arena tours, as the Stones continued to be a huge concert attraction; by 2007 they had recorded the all-time highest-grossing concert tour three times, and as recently as 2021 they were the highest-earning live act of the year. From Wyman's departure in 1993 to Watts' death in 2021, the band continued as a four-piece core, with Darryl Jones playing bass on tour and on most studio recordings, while Steve Jordan became their touring drummer following Watts' death. Their 2016 album, Blue & Lonesome, became their twelfth UK number-one album.
The Rolling Stones' estimated record sales of 200 million make them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The band has won three Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Billboard magazine and Rolling Stone have ranked the band as one of the greatest of all time.

Moonlight Mile
The Rolling Stones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a head full of snow
With a head full of snow
In the window there's a face you know
Don't the nights pass slow
Don't the nights pass slow
The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind
Just another mad mad day on the road
I am just living to be lying by your side
But I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes
Gonna warm my bones
Gonna warm my bones
I got silence on my radio
Let the air waves flow
Let the air waves flow
Oh I'm sleeping under strange strange skies
Just another mad mad day on the road
My dreams is fading down the railway line
I'm just about a moonlight mile down the road
I'm hiding sister and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm hiding baby and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm riding down you moonlight mile
Let it go now, come on up babe
Yeah, let it go now
Yeah, flow now baby
Yeah move on now yeah
Yeah, I'm coming home
'Cause, I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Down the road, down the road
The Rolling Stones's Moonlight Mile is about being lost and trying to find one's way back home. The opening lines paint a picture of a cold and lonely night with a "head full of snow", likely referring to confusion and disorientation. The face in the window that the singer knows may be a reminder of what he's left behind or what he's longing to return to. The nights pass slowly as he feels stuck in limbo.
The verses describe the singer's experiences while on the road. The sound of strangers and their conversations doesn't capture his attention, and he longs to be lying by his partner's side. The singer is trying to find warmth and comfort as he makes a rag pile of his shiny clothes. The silence on the radio allows the airwaves to flow, suggesting a sense of freedom and escape. He is sleeping under strange skies, and his dreams are fading down the railway line, signifying the distance that separates him from his loved one.
The chorus describes the singer's hopes and wishes to return home. He is "just about a moonlight mile down the road," suggesting that he is close, but not yet home. The ending of the song is hopeful as he declares that he's "coming home," emphasizing the need for connection and intimacy.

Hi Trocadero
Lets ride the road together.
Can't you hear me knocking?
Riding side by side with a Steppenwolf. One more Magic Carpet Ride on the last Moonlight Mile.
🐺
The headphones are pulsing while time is going by. My V-Twin roars the roads from Norkap down to Sicily.
We've seen so many things the youngsters wouldn't believe.
But every thing has its time.
And we were lucky with our old days.
And this spirit... we are still rocking it.
Deep in the West we were Born to Be Wild. 🤘

I had Sticky Fingers on 8 track - player mounted under my dashboard of my car back in the 1970's. You old Rockers like me know what that is.
Now in my 60ies riding with this song on my apple car play driving down South to FL from NY in 2024 this song plays recalling all the dudes I hung out with & adventures we had, many friends now past or faded away, the lovers I had the places I've been the magnificent achievements as well as the devastating failures. I'm still rolling down the highway as the moon glows thru my skylight as it silently tells me to Rock On & keep Rolling down the road. As this bittersweet Stones masterpiece embraces my heart mind & soul. I'm hiding sister and I'm dreaming down the road.
So Rock on brothers and sisters - & may your road be smooth, clear and steady.

Awesome.

I hear you.
From another 60 something life long Rolling Stones fan.

I'm a little younger, 55, but understand what you're saying completely, and have had those same moments quite a bit myself lately. Wasn't happy with myself a few years ago, and needed both knee's replaced. Was 40 lbs overweight, and popping "doctor prescribed" norcos like tic tacs. Had both done, got off those miserable pills, and back into great shape, which in turn has made me a better dad, husband, friend, etc. I've learned that it's not so much what happens in life, but how you react to it, and no matter what happens when you handle the knocks the right way, life and living in your own skin becomes much easier, and generally also better for everyone around you. Thanks for the post and keep fighting the good fight!

It’s a masterpiece. The orchestration, Mick’s vocals are sublime and bluesie. One of the best underrated Stones songs. Listen to this with headphones. So delicate and so powerful.
