Too Much Blood
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna dance, I wanna sing
I wanna bust up everything
To make some love
I wanna dance, I wanna sing
I wanna bust up everything
And make some love

I can feel it in the air
Feel it up above
Feel the tension everywhere
There is too much blood
Too much blood, well alright

Everything you see
On the movie screen is tame
Everything's gonna be arranged

A friend of mine was this Japanese
Who had a girlfriend in Paris
He, he had to date her for six months
And eventually she said yes

You know, he took her to his apartment
Cut off her head, put the rest of her body
In the refrigerator, ate her piece by piece
Put her in the refrigerator, put her in the freezer

And when he ate her he took her bones
To the Bois de Boulogne
By chance, a taxi driver noticed him
Burying the bones, you don't believe me?
Truth is stranger than fiction
We drive through there everyday

I wanna dance, I wanna sing
I wanna bust up everything
Be number one, yeah!
I wanna dance, I wanna sing
I wanna bust up everything
And have some fun

I can feel it everywhere
Feel it up above
Feel the tension in the air
There is too much blood, too much blood
Too much, yeah, too much blood, a'right

Did you ever see 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'?
Horrible, wasn't it?
You know people ask me, "Is it really true
You know where you live in Texas
Is that really true what they do around there, people?"

I say, "Hey, now everytime I drive through the crossroads
I get scared there's a bloke running around
With a fuckin' chain saw
Oh, no, he's gotta cut off me
Oh no no! Don't saw off me leg, don't saw off me arm"

When I go to the movies, you know
I'd like to see something more romantic
You know like, 'An Officer And A Gentleman'
Or something, something you excite the wife too
You know what I mean?

I wanna dance, I wanna sing
I wanna bust up everything
And have some fun
I wanna dance, I wanna sing
I wanna bust up everything
And make some love

I can feel it everywhere, feel it up above
Feel the tension in the air
There is too much blood
Too much blood, alright!

Pretty ladies, don't be scared
Pretty ladies, don't be scared
Pretty ladies, don't be scared, yeah

Pretty ladies, don't despair
Pretty ladies, don't despair
There's still so much love

Yeah, too much, too much, yeah
Too much blood, too much blood
Too much, too much blood

Too much blood, too much blood
Too much blood, too much blood

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones' song Too Much Blood appears to be a commentary on violence and its presence in different forms of media. The lyrics express the desire to dance, sing, and make love, but there is an underlying feeling of tension caused by the presence of violence. The line "Everything you see on the movie screen is tame" suggests that while the violence is glorified in movies and other media, it does not fully capture the reality of its impact. The song also references real-life instances of violence, such as the case of a Japanese man who killed and ate his girlfriend, which highlights the gruesome and disturbing nature of these acts.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Too much blood" which is a direct reference to the fact that there is too much violence in the world, and it is becoming overwhelming. It implies that while humans feel the need to dance, sing, and have fun, the presence of violence always looms in the background, making it hard to enjoy life fully. The song also suggests that violence is not limited to certain parts of the world or certain types of people, as evidenced by the reference to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Overall, Too Much Blood is a powerful critique of the prevalence of violence in society and the impact it has on our daily lives.

I love this album version of "Too Much Blood" —
In fact, I love that whole UNDERCOVER album!
👍👍👍 It gets a triple-thumbs-up from me.
I say 'album version' because there's also an extended
Disco version, which I enjoy, especially Bill Wyman's bass.
Here's the link- ➡️ sorry, had to come back to remove link ⬅️

Has anyone else noticed this 👉 the song mentions
the movie "Officer And A Gentleman," right?
In that movie the drill sergeant, played by Louis Gossett Jr.,
is sternly addressing his group of new recruits, and at
one point says, "....listening to that Mick Jagger music
and knocking your country I bet...."
Here's the clip ➡️ sorry again, had to come back to remove link. ⬅️

Well I thought that the Mick Jagger reference was really cool,
especially since I'm a huge fan of The Rolling Stones. 👍

Okay so that movie was released July 1982.
The next new Stones studio album released after that
movie was "Undercover" which was late 1983.

"Too Much Blood," of course, is on that album and the Stones
returned the favor by referencing the movie.

Jagger raps, "When I go to the movies, you know I'd like to see something more romantic like 'AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN' or something.
Something you can take the wife to, you know what I mean?"

Isn't that cool??

Has anyone else noticed that?? 😃
The movie referenced The Stones, then
The Stones referenced the movie in return.

So cool indeed !!! 😎

Anyway, LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES -
one of God's greatest gifts to all mankind. 😇

I always thought this song, in fact the Undercover album, were very underrated. The groove in this song is infectious.

Jochen Mosthaf

@FOGHORN LEGHORN what’s the definition of underrated? Lots of bad reviews? Low sales?

FOGHORN LEGHORN

What makes you believe it's underrated? Please explain.

Not "uneven" to me at All. Love this album. Feel on baby is maybe my least favorite song on it but I have played the album to death
