You Got Me Rocking
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a butcher cutting up meat
My hands were bloody, I'm dying on my feet
I was a surgeon 'till I start to shake
I was a-falling 'till you put on the brakes

Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now

I was a pitcher down in a slump
I was a fighter taken for a sucker punch
Feeling bad, guess I lost my spring
I was the boxer who can't get in the ring

Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, there ain't no stopping me
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, you got me rocking, alright

I was a hooker losing her looks
I was a writer can't write another book
I was all dried up dying to get wet
I was a tycoon drowning in debt, I said

I said ah, hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey, there ain't no stopping me
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now
Hey, hey
Hey, hey, you got me rocking now

That's all, really
Come on, come on

Don't stop
Don't stop
Don't
Don't stop
Oh
Keep it going now

Come on
Yeah, ay

Overall Meaning

"You Got Me Rocking" by The Rolling Stones is a song about a person who is feeling down and out, but is suddenly revived by someone else's love and attention. The lyrics take various occupations as metaphors for the singer's state of mind - he was a butcher with bloody hands, a surgeon whose hands were shaking, a pitcher in a slump, a fighter who was taken down, and a writer who couldn't write another book. However, with the presence of the one he's singing about, he feels alive and energized. The person who is "rocking" him is the cause of his renewed vigor.

The chorus of "Hey, hey, you got me rocking now" is a testament to the power of love and how it can bring a person back to life. The repetition drives home the idea that love is a force that can energize and motivate us. The song forms part of The Rolling Stones' 1994 album, Voodoo Lounge.

I have been a Rolling Stones Fanatic since 1963! The longest playing rock ‘n’ roll band in history. Truly remarkable!

This track , and many others, showcase the brilliance of the late great Charlie Watts. He’s irreplaceable. Unique in his style. A musician who played simply for the love of it.
