That we had lost
Regardless of the price
Regardless of the cost
And I was willing to break
Every moral that I made
To bow down at your feet
Marie
And I could hardly take
How you turned so cold that day
How the blood drained from your face
How your blue eyes turned to grey
Without a farewell embrace
You turned you walked away
You wrote our epitaph
You dug our final grave
Marie
Marie
And it's so much colder
The nights move so slowly
We're getting older now, Marie
We're getting older now, Marie
And I can't believe that
Our days are all past
Can you hear me now, Marie
Can you hear me now, Marie
Marie
Marie
My sweet Marie
Oh Marie
In this song, it seems that the singer is reflecting on a past relationship with a woman named Marie. The first verse shows how the singer was willing to do anything to salvage their relationship, even if it meant going against their morals. The second verse explains the singer's shock and hurt after Marie coldly walked away from their relationship without even saying goodbye. The chorus of the song, "Marie, Marie, my sweet Marie," seems to reveal a longing for what they lost and a sense of sadness.
One possible interpretation of this song is that it speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and nostalgia for what could have been. It is a song about taking risks for love and dealing with the pain when it doesn't work out. The singer's longing for Marie may indicate that they are still grappling with the relationship's loss, adding a layer of complexity to the song.
