Howard and Crisp met while in college in Wilmington, North Carolina. That fall, they moved to nearby Raleigh to form The Rosebuds. Merge Records discovered their demo in early 2003 and released Make Out as a full-length debut album that October.
The Rosebuds Unwind EP, an EP with six songs, was released in April 2005, followed by Birds Make Good Neighbors in September. Night of the Furies was released in April 2007 and "Life Like" in October 2008.
The Rosebuds will release their next album in the summer of 2011 on Merge Records.
Make Out Song

And come back to bed
Wait in the far east
There's nothing left
No, nothing left
And off with the make up
Let's see your eyes
By my side
Let's leave this lonely tease
Tonight
True love is more than
A make out song
Waited to tell you
Way too long
Wait a little bit
We've been forever
For two years now
First time I kissed you
I almost died
So maybe there's more than love tonight
So maybe sometime
The Rosebuds's song "Make Out Song" is a romantic and nostalgic track that speaks to the complexities of love and intimacy. The song begins with a request to "put down those car keys" and return to bed with the singer, suggesting a desire for physical closeness and a sense of comfort and companionship. The mention of "nothing left" in the far east could be interpreted as a sense of disillusionment or loss, but the overall tone is one of yearning and a longing for connection.
The second verse suggests a desire for authenticity and vulnerability in the relationship, with a request to remove makeup and "see your eyes." The language here is sensual and intimate, with a focus on the physical sensations of being with someone heavy and sweet by one's side. The repetition of "tonight" emphasizes the immediacy and urgency of this moment, as the singer longs to leave behind the loneliness and uncertainty of the past and embrace the possibility of true love.
The chorus reinforces this theme, asserting that "true love is more than a make out song" and imploring the listener to wait a little bit longer for something real and enduring. The bridge references the past, noting that the couple has been together for two years and that the first kiss was almost overwhelming in its power. The final line - "so maybe sometime" - suggests a willingness to embrace the unknown and take a chance on love despite the risks and uncertainties.
