Search the Internet for info on The Rosenbergs and youll come across hundreds of articles summarizing a history of bold career moves, the most famous being their rejecting an offer to appear on the much-hyped (and now defunct) Farmclub television show. They then teamed up with Robert Fripps label, DGM, to pave the way for artists everywhere to start taking back ownership of their masters. A few months later, while the rest of the music industry was waging war against Napster, The Rosenbergs took another controversial step by teaming with the infamous file-sharing service for tour sponsorship and a "buy one, get one free" promotion for their sophomore release Mission: You. That one pissed off a retailer or two. Over the years, the plucky DIY New York-based band has endured management, label and lineup changes, and self-financed tours on both sides of the Atlantic.
All of which begs the question: How have The Rosenbergs managed to survive in an industry where its almost impossible to cash in without selling out? The answer can be found on their Force MP debut Department Store Girl, an invigorating album of irresistibly catchy guitar pop bright enough to part the clouds. Bursting with hummable hooks, terrific melodies and sharp wordplay, delivered by Fagins intoxicatingly tuneful voice, the album is everything youd expect from the band Entertainment Weekly once praised for its "infectious songs and head-bobbing choruses."
Nighttime Lover

and you tell by the way that she's wandering
all the roots in her hair
take a moment and stare
can you tell by the way that she's offering
take a moment aside
give the woman a ride
and she tells you it's love when she's faking it.
then your hitting the road
It's a hell of a way to be taken in.
Ooh, what'd you think she should do?
Ooh, what are you going through?
Nighttime lover, meet me under cover.
Laying face to face, we're one to another.
Living for the band, does she really understand
that she wants more?
Nighttime lover, meet me under cover.
Moving place to place, from one to another.
I'm really oversaturated, but it's all for you.
Giving away all the things that you say,
and it's cool in the way that she thinks of it.

The Rosenbergs's song "Nighttime Lover" is a catchy pop-rock tune that seems upbeat and fun at first listen, but upon closer analysis, the lyrics reveal a darker, more complex story. The song tells the story of a woman who seems to be searching for something, or someone, to fill a void in her life. She offers herself up to men, using her beauty and charm to lure them in, but ultimately doesn't seem to find what she's looking for.
The chorus of the song, "Nighttime lover, meet me under cover/Laying face to face, we're one to another," suggests that the woman is looking for intimacy and connection, but the fact that it always happens under cover implies that she doesn't want anyone to see her searching or judge her for it. The line "Living for the band, does she really understand that she wants more?" implies that she's chasing something that may not even exist, and that chasing it is preventing her from living a more authentic and fulfilling life.
Overall, "Nighttime Lover" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of seeking external validation and the importance of figuring out what truly makes us happy and fulfilled.
