Collide
The Ruse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know I won't start taking pictures until the trip is done
You know I won't stop blowing kisses at everyone
It's not where we are it's where we're going that gets me inside
Right where the heart and the headache where they collide
Straight to the heart of the problem but the damage is done
I pick up the phone call the medics but they never come
Swept under the rug where no one can see
I've already lost a small part of me
Take what you want
No please just take what you need
Love pull me
Love heal me
Oh how she comes when we collide
Not now you'll say this is the game we play
And our love comes when we collide
It drives us apart, this attraction
It wont be our fault
Stand with your feet on the stairway but you never walk
When will you move
Leave here for good
Can't break the strings that you never could
It's all that you want
Its all that you need
Love pull me
Love heal me
Our love comes when we collide
Not now you say
This is the game we play
Our love comes when we collide
Can you feel it
Can you heal it
No?
Love pull me and love it heals me
Our love comes when we collide
Not now you say

This is how the game is played
Our love comes when we collide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Ruse's song "Collide" speak of a relationship that is simultaneously full of attraction and heartache. The first verse describes how the singer is not interested in taking pictures until the end of the relationship, a sign that they do not see a future in it. At the same time, they blow kisses at everyone, which may imply that they are trying to mask their true feelings and put on a facade. The chorus reveals the root of the problem, which is the "collide" between heart and headache. The singer wants to move forward ("it's not where we are it's where we're going that gets me inside"), but is held back by the pain caused by the relationship.

The second verse takes a darker turn, as the singer tries to call for help but no one listens. The problem is swept under the rug, suggesting that the relationship is dysfunctional and no one wants to acknowledge it. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the conflict between the attraction and the pain. The bridge raises the question of when the singer will leave the relationship for good, but no answer is given. The song ends with a plea for love to pull and heal.

Overall, "Collide" portrays a complicated and ambivalent relationship, in which love and pain are tightly intertwined. The singer is torn between wanting to move on and being unable to let go of the attraction to their partner. The song suggests that this "collide" is not necessarily healthy, but is nevertheless hard to escape from.

I went to school with all these kids at AMDA. Though I was a first year when this was going on, I believe I could have been in it. My teacher was the director of the dance when this was taking place and he told me if I was in my 2nd year he would have me in this for sure. To clear up questions for the dancers, this was for free and extra credit. The lead, her name (to cover for FB stalkers) Ms. Steel.
