Kiss
The Rushing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I like cake,
And no mistake.
But, baby, if you insist,
I'll cut out cake
Just for your sake.
Baby, come on,
Knock me a kiss.
I like pie.
I hope to die.
Just get a load of this,
When you get high,
Doggone the pie.
Baby, come on,
Knock me a kiss.

When you press your lips to mine,
'Twas then I understood.
They taste like candy, brandy and wine,
Peaches, bananas, and everything good.

I love jam,
And no flim-flam,
Scratch that off my list.
This ain't no jam,
The jam can scram.
Baby, come on,
Knock me a kiss.

When you press your sweet little lips to mine,
Then I understood, oh babe.
They taste like candy, brandy and wine,
Peaches, bananas, and everything good.

I love jam,
And no flim-flam.
Scratch that off my list.
This ain't no jam,
The jam can scram.
Baby, come on,

Knock me a kiss.
Knock me a kiss

Overall Meaning

The Rushing's song 'Kiss' is a playful love song about a person who is willing to give up their favorite foods for the one they love. The lyrics convey the idea that the person's affection for their partner is so strong that it overrides their own desires for cake, pie, and jam. The chorus "Baby, come on, knock me a kiss" is an invitation for the partner to give them a kiss, which they describe as tasting like candy, brandy, wine, peaches, bananas, and everything good.

The lyrics use food metaphors to describe the passion and emotions of being in love. The references to cake, pie, and jam are used as a way to express the sweetness and indulgence of the relationship. The song also highlights the physical pleasure of kissing and the sensory experience of taste.

Interestingly, the song was originally written and recorded by Louis Jordan in 1942, during the height of the swing era. The Rushing's version was released in 1977 as part of their album 'From Harlem to Hollywood.'

And everyone knew it including both bands.
Probably why Gene and Paul were uptight.
I’d imagine that Alex and Geddy picked up instruments due to their love for music.
Gene and Paul picked up instruments to make 💰 and get girls. And they were way more invested in image, “shock rock”, building hype through promotion. Cartoons, comic books etc etc meanwhile being just decent enough musically to be passable.
While the Rush guys grew in popularity because of the honed skills and cohesiveness amongst the 3 piece.
Smart fans could see the difference from miles away. Fortunately for Kiss the smart fans are usually the minority.

Just proves again that Ace was the only true rock star in Kiss.

I think Paul had the best vocals of the original 4 (Eric carr had an amazing voice), but aside from him being a diva, he never really seemed like much of a frontman to me. Ace and Gene had much more personality

John McMinn

@Evan H. Paul was definitely the most prolific, he had twice as many songs as everyone else, and spoke to the audience, so those 2 things define a front man/ band leader .
the origional Demo had good songs Black Diamond and Deuce are strong songs by any standard

MAGNETO

He was certainly the best musician in Kiss anyway.

MDK2

There really shouldn't be any doubt that Ace was the man. His was, and remains, the only good album of those solo records they made under the KISS name.

Carlos

@Evan H. Hmmmm…Paul Stanley is my favorite frontman.
