These Days
The Rust and the fury Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

welcome to the land where chief yellow horse
used to sell his ass
while telling me that
he loves me
how far can you lose your pride
I know that it´s hard to stay clean these days

welcome to the river
where young women used to drown their babies
´cause there´s not enough to eat
their husbands told them so
how worthy is a life
stay clean these days

welcome to the country where the boldheads
burn the houses of their neighbors
just because they are bored
why don´t they burn themselves
I know that it´s hard to stay clean these days

stay clean these days
stay clean these days
stay clean these days
stay clean these days

I know that it´s hard to stay clean these days
stay clean these days

Overall Meaning

The Rust and the Fury's song These Days is a nostalgic, introspective song about the memories of the past and the sacrifices made for the sake of following the dream of rock and roll. The opening lines of the song, "Late at night I switch on my radio, I sing myself a lullaby, I close my eyes and wait, Till the wind blows round the corner, Bringing back the memories to me," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is alone at night with only the radio for company and is transported back to a time when they were young and full of hope.

The chorus, "Won't forget these days, And I never thought I would, Won't forget these days," is a declaration of the importance of the memories that have been made. The memories of the past are an important part of who the singer is and they never want to forget them. They sing about how they "dreamed our lives, and we lived our dreams," and how they've "sacrificed our future for a heart of rock'n roll." The lyrics capture the feeling of nostalgia that we all feel at some point in our lives, the longing to return to a simpler time when everything seemed possible and the future was unwritten.

The second verse delves deeper into the sacrifices made in the pursuit of the dream. The line, "Everybody's so important and they all want to cheat you," speaks to the difficulties faced when trying to make it in the music industry. The singer sings about how they had to "learn it by heart, right from the start," and how they had to count what they've sold but gold remains cold. They also touch on the bonds formed with others pursuing the same dream. The lyrics, "Young boys take their dirty hands and swear, Nothing should come between us, But mostly it comes earlier than anybody wants it," speak to the fragility of those bonds and how difficult it is to maintain them.
