Black & White
The Samples Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Black and white
Always fighting
Blue and green
It'll soon be spring
In the sky
Face and I
Look for time
Candles bind

Orange and Red
The sun falls dead
Chased by the moon
Who's losing his room
So much is happening all around
Listen to the lake
And absorb the sound

(chorus)
It's calling me from another world
And the stars in your eyes
It's calling me from another world
In your eyes

Purple and blue
While the sun's shining through
The cats on the table
Think we'll always be able
To live in the colors
That were given by the mothers
Stolen by the one
Who returns holding none

(chorus)

Black and white
Always fighting
Blue and green
It'll soon be spring

It'll soon be spring

It'll soon be spring
etc.

Overall Meaning

The Samples’ song Black and White is a contemplative look at the world around us and the forces that seem to be in constant opposition. The opening lines “Black and white, always fighting, blue and green, it’ll soon be spring” sets the tone for the whole song. The colors, like opposing forces, are always at odds with each other, but in the end, there is hope that things will change for the better. The second verse further explores this idea with the lines “Orange and red, the sun falls dead, chased by the moon who’s losing his room”. It’s as if the sun and moon are involved in a never-ending race that they can never win, but still, they continue to try.

The chorus, with its repetition of “It’s calling me from another world and the stars in your eyes, it’s calling me from another world in your eyes” suggests that there is something beyond the colors and the fighting, something greater that we can aspire to. The song seems to encourage us to look beyond the surface level and to find the beauty and meaning in the world around us. The final verse, with its image of the cats on the table and the idea that we can still live in the colors that were given to us by the mothers, is a reminder that even in difficult times, there is still beauty all around us if we take the time to look for it.
