Velvet
The Savoys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Her skin is like velvet
Her face cut from stone
Her eyes when she's smiling
Will never reach home

But hear how she sings

Her touch would be tender
Her lips would be warm
But when we're together
I'm always alone

But hear how she sings
But hear how she sings
But hear how she sings

Her skin is like velvet
So I went to her home
Her place like a palace
With things you can't own

Her skin is like velvet
And hear how she sings
Hear how she sings

She sings
Hear how she sings

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Savoy's song Velvet describe the singer's infatuation with a woman whose beauty and outward demeanor suggest a coldness and aloofness that he finds both alluring and frustrating. He describes her skin as being like velvet and her face as being cut from stone, emphasizing both her physical beauty and her seemingly impenetrable emotional barriers. When she smiles, he suggests that her eyes do not reflect the warmth and joy associated with such an expression, but instead remain distant and detached.

Despite recognizing that his relationship with this woman leaves him feeling perpetually alone, the singer is drawn to her, describing her touch as tender and her lips as warm. When he goes to her home, he finds it to be like a palace filled with opulent possessions that carry an air of exclusivity and mystery. Through it all, the singer is captivated by the sound of the woman's voice as she sings.

Wow, love to hear the original version. I love this and the a-ha one now. Pål and Lauren’s voices. ❤ Pål and that guitar at the beginning, killing it!
Thank you for posting this❤

Wait, did I say at the beginning? Pål kills it through the whole song! To me really, he kills it with the guitar in many songs, including A-ha. The man is so talented and should get way more credit with this.
I so feel Morten got way too much attention in A-ha. Magne and Pål were out in the background a lot. These two men have talent in spades! Not that Morten isn’t talented with that voice. Just gets old reading comments in videos where it’s a killer song that Magne or Pål wrote or one or both of them are killing it on their instruments. Then the main topic in the comments is about Morten’s looks. Sigh 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄
Pretty refreshing to see when they get their much deserved praise. I need to watch more videos like this. 👍🏼😊
