If You Could See Me Now
The Script Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Oh if you could see me now)

(Oh if you could see me now)

It was February 14, Valentine's Day
The roses came but they took you away
Tattooed on my arm is a charm to disarm all the harm
Gotta keep myself calm but the truth is you're gone

And I'll never get to show you these songs
Dad, you should see the tours that I'm on
I see you standing there next to Mom
Both singing along, yeah on and on

And there are days when I'm losing my faith
Because the man wasn't good, he was great
He'd say "Music was the home for your pain"
And explained I was young, he would say

Take that rage, put it on a page
Take that page to the stage
Blow the roof off the place
I'm trying to make you proud
Do everything you did
I hope you're up there with God saying "That's my kid!"

I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow?
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)

(Oh if you could see me now, yeah)

If you could see me now would you recognize me?
Would you pat me on the back or would you criticize me?
Would you follow every line on my tear-stained face?
Put your hand on my heart that was cold
As the day you were taken away

I know it's been a while but I can see you clear as day
Right now, I wish I could hear you say
I drink too much, and I smoke too much dutch
But if you can't see me now, that shit's a must

You used to say I won't know a wind until it crossed me
Like I won't know real love 'til I've loved and I've lost it
So if you lost a sister, someone's lost a mom
And if you lost a dad then someone's lost a son
And they're all missing out, yeah they're all missing out
So if you get a second to look down on me now

Mom, Dad I'm just missing you now

I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)

Oh, oh
Would you call me a saint or a sinner?
Would you love me a loser or winner?
Oh, oh
When I see my face in the mirror
We look so alike that it makes me shiver

I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Yeah I'm just missing you now

I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)

You could see, you could see me now
You could see, you could see me now

Overall Meaning

The Script's song "If You Could See Me Now" is a tribute to band member Danny O'Donoghue's late father and his late mother. The song was released in 2013 as a part of their album "#3." The song talks about the pain and emptiness that Danny feels after losing his parents. The lyrics use the idea of a conversation with his parents where he explains to his dad that the music industry has been treating him well, and his mom sings along. He also talks about his faith, questioning it on some days while remaining hopeful on others.

In the first verse, Danny uses Valentine's Day as a reference to the day he lost his mother. She was taken from him suddenly, and he got a tattoo on his arm to remember her. The tattoo is a charm to disarm all harm. Although he tries to stay calm, the truth is that she's no longer with him. He talks about how he wishes he could show his parents how successful he's become and that they could be there with him.

In the second verse, Danny's father says that music was the place where he dealt with his pain, and encouraged his son to do the same. He tells him to take his anger and put it on paper before taking it to the stage to perform. The last verse is a conversation between Danny and his parents where he asks them questions that have been on his mind since they both passed away. He wonders if they'd still recognize him and love him despite his flaws.

Overall, "If You Could See Me Now" is a heartfelt and emotional tribute to Danny's parents. It gives listeners a glimpse into his pain and how he copes with the loss.

@allisthemoist2244

That hits home. My dad just finished helping me apply to Harvard and Princeton on January first at 11:40pm (19 minutes before their deadlines.) I would never have had a shot at them if it wasn't for my dad's presence in my life and the fact that he worked his ass off as a dirt poor kid to go to Harvard himself to one day raise the best possible kids. I only started taking life seriously in my senior year, and actually started listening to what he was saying about work and responsibility. The only reason I stopped taking him and his encouragement for me to work hard for granted is because he got diagnosed with and cured of a terminal cancer that would have killed him if we hadn't caught it on time. The only reason we caught it is because he happened to make friends with the few good people at Harvard one of whom went to the medical school and happened to notice the slight symptoms.

Life is so unfair. I get a shot at greatness (getting into a good school) because dumb luck while I could have so easily have kept taking things for granted or lost my father before I'd actually built character.

I don't know if this is the right place or not, but you're at the very least lucky that you learned character from him before he passed. If you had been like me, things would have been so much worse. You may not know how much someone's character can grow in one year when they listen to their father, but when I look back on how much he helped me change through senior year, I can't believe how close to losing him I was.

Good luck in university or trade school. Success is so much up to dumb luck that, as far as I can tell, the most (if not only) reasonable thing a father can be proud of is the character of the children. Character is the one thing that you don't get by being lucky. Therefore, if you maintain a strong character, your dad from heaven will be more proud of you than if you were Jeff Bezos. (He probably already is)

Thank you for leaving this comment and I hope things do go well for you.
