Having 3 weeks of for every two weeks of work is really good! We been fighting to get equal time of at where I used work off shore but we never had it. Our work schedule was 7 days work and 3-4 days off.

Also only 12 hours is considered work time.

I work in the industry right now in Alberta. The federal government is trying to end oil exploration. Due to this investment in future projects is down. Pipelines are impossible to build. This means there aren't as many jobs as there used to be. They also may not last long.

@bodybong doubt you'll see this but I feel yeah there man. I work the night shift at a factory (I prefer the night) but I'm supposed to work 3 days one week and 4 the next 12 hour shifts, but because OT money is so nice I usually always work at least 5 days. And it's 2 10 min breaks with a 20 min lunch sometimes 30 min lunch depending on the crew/station I'm at for the night.

The rough necks I worked with with their hours and time off made almost as much as the entry level engineers around 90 k. The drillers 130-140k and the tool pushers 150s to 180s. The drilling supervisors pay varies a lot of them are consultants get paid a day rate, but the senior ones I worked with would make 200 to 300k. The directional drillers same or more, just the LWD hands would make 180k and the directional drillers 300k, but they work a bunch of hours.

Their salaries are off. 60k-70k is more what an entry level process/production technician gets paid. I never heard of anyone making 40 k on a rig 😂

I work as a chemical engineer in designing those oil rigs and FPSO's. Generally you are posted as a production engineer with 14 days on off pattern. 14 days you are at home free from work. At oil rig you have to work for 12 hrs food is provided. To and fro tickets are completely borne by the company. It gets dirty at time and feels laborious. IT jobs are better.

@HotAction but its especially how the oil industry works. I work on supply ships that work with rigs and drill ships that operate in the gulf. And the second the industry crashes, me and other sailors are most likely going to find ourselves without a job. However, it’s not like that with say Ship assist Harbor Tugs. Ships will always need Tugs to bring them in and out from ports. Ship assist Tugboats are probably one of the more secure jobs in the maritime industry.

Actually not every single rig workers earn so much, some of them are paid quite low since their agent or manpower supply company take their salary as high as 70% off from what theyre paid. they have no choice since most of bigger company are rely on manpower supply agent for recruiting crew or workers.

Yes there are, normally you will need certification for working on ex certified equipment possible tube fittings course depending on site. medical and survival as well everyone needs that. I have jumped between both oil and gas and pharma in the past,

Helicopter companies operate from land and will fly a daily schedule to the offshore platforms.

Helicopter pilots tend to live onshore and fly out to the rig daily, its been a very long time since I have known helicopters to be based offshore.

There were pools of oil lying on or near the surface 500 years ago. Still are, if you know where to look. Not heard of anyone mining underground for it, though.
Not used for combustion engines, of course, but quite handy for fuelling a lamp or smearing on a roof to seal it against the weather.
