Pristine Christine
The Sea Urchins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You swear you know.
Perhaps you do,
It could be true.
But you don't react like me (Oh)

Pristine Christine,
Will I ever feel?
Come to my world.
Don't be gone
with what you're on
and see if it will help more
I'm biased (Yeah)

Pristine Christine
Could you ever sing?

Answer and always get: You;
Me: I can't just change that's for sure.

Helping myself
for you is
too hard I think
but leaving it inside
now that don't make me feel nice.
Everyone's turn now.
You've hurt me!

Pristine Christine
will we ever be?

oh no no no no

Answer and always get: You;
Me: I don't know if to let you down.

Overall Meaning

The Sea Urchins's song Pristine Christine is a heartfelt expression of love and longing for someone named Christine. The first two lines of the song address the idea that Christine thinks she knows the singer, but maybe she doesn't truly understand him. The lyrics suggest the singer feels something deep for Christine that she might not reciprocate. He wonders if he will ever truly experience love with her ("Will I ever feel?").

As the song progresses, the singer implores Christine to come to his world and see if it will help her. He acknowledges that he is biased towards her and wants her to feel the same way about him that he does for her ("Could you ever sing?"). The singer seems to be grappling with feelings of hurt and disappointment in the midst of his desire for Christine, which is demonstrated in the lines, "Helping myself for you is too hard I think, but leaving it inside now that don't make me feel nice. Everyone's turn now. You've hurt me!"

The repeated call for Christine in the chorus implies that the singer is unsure of whether they will ever be romantically involved. The final lines of the song, "Answer and always get: You; Me: I don't know if to let you down. Pristine Christine, Pristine Christine," suggest that there is a tension between wanting to pursue Christine despite the uncertainty and choosing to let her go.

One of my favorite bands from the Sarah label. The Sea Urchins clearly displayed their influences. This one is very reminiscent of the Records "Starry Eyes". A wonderful driving pop song. And I have an original copy on vinyl !

I only got one problem with everyone liking this now...people loved it when it came out btw..my problem is this guy has got one of thee best ever voices and virtually nobody has ever heard him sing..James Roberts has one of the most beautiful voices Ive ever heard, makes me weep..even on his 2006? Solo lp his voice staggers, true beauty.

Jim Newcombe

"one of the best ever voices"? A risible exaggeration, surely, but we both love the song, so say ten Hail Mary's and all is forgiven.

I don't know if you're still around son, but this track, and the whole album, was a gem

Keep trying to explain to my kids - in those days there were records and not many were pressed when it came to independents like Creation and Sarah. Love this - takes me back to watered down lager, Indie dives and shopping in Flip.

This has some interesting classicist touches that transcend its '80s indie origins, e.g. an opening lick reminiscent of "Arthur", an overall melody & jangle that sounds like a more energetic version of something off Love's first album. Shame the collector's market has made it impossible to procure the original record - would sound fine on a good deck
