Members Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake's releases are largely paintings by Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band's 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design.
The band was on hiatus from 2004 to 2007, as Prekop and Prewitt each released further solo albums with accompanying tours, and focused on their visual art pursuits. Their most recent album Any Day was released in May 2018, with the band now performing as a trio (sans-bassist Eric Claridge). They have remained relatively quiet since then, aside from Sam Prekop releasing several long-form electronic music projects, often in collaboration with fellow bandmember John McEntire.

On and gone away
I had to follow the moonlight
Fallen against the ocean
With similar sounds to mention
I wait for want to go back
I had to give in to no one
I'm still alive [?]
I want to know
That I had to go, no fault of mine
Our lessons learned
Won't talk to anyone
Standing here with nothing to find
It's been cold for days alone
I've been holding on
I found I've just started
But I have to go, if you don't mind
The tears of my heart
[?] Of anyone else
I had to cover the mountains
On and gone away
I had to follow the moonlight
Fallen against the ocean
Just checking my law's within line
I want to, always forgiven
I had there nothing to go on
How long, well, just this morning
All that happened for reasons of fun
A shadow throws [?]
Crawling out of it to never let go
Waiting here with nothing to say
If all has gone just one way
All I know appears to [?]
I find with my hand
I had to cover the mountains
On and gone away
I had to follow the moonlight
Fallen against the ocean
With similar sounds to mention
I wait for want to go back
I had to give in to no one
Crooked smiles are broken
"Cover the Mountain" by The Sea and Cake is a song with introspective and contemplative lyrics that explore themes of self-discovery, resilience, and embracing change. The lyrics suggest a journey, both physical and metaphorical, as the singer speaks of covering mountains, following moonlight, and being against the ocean. These references can be interpreted as the challenges and obstacles one encounters in life.
The lines "I had to cover the mountains, on and gone away" indicate a determination to overcome difficulties and move forward. The repetition of "I had to" emphasizes a sense of obligation or necessity, implying that the singer feels compelled to face these challenges head-on. The mention of the moonlight and ocean represents the allure of unknown paths and the allure of the vastness and uncertainty of life.
Throughout the song, there is a yearning to understand one's place in the world and to find meaning in life experiences. The references to "crooked smiles" and "lessons learned" indicate hardships and the scars left behind, yet the singer remains resilient and alive. The lines "I'm still alive, I want to know, that I had to go, no fault of mine" suggest a determination to overcome adversity and a refusal to be defeated by circumstances.
Overall, "Cover the Mountain" speaks to the universal human experience of facing challenges, embracing change, and finding one's own path in life.
