The One I Love Is Gone
The Secret Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know I don't know
Where I'll go or what I'll do
It makes no difference what I do without you

'Cause I love you my darling
But I'll try to let you be
Goodbye it's the last you'll hear of me
Well I found a bluebird
High on a mountainside
And that little bird it sings little songs

So I'll sigh, I'll cry
I'll even want to die
For the one I love is gone

Well I don't know I don't know
Where I'll go or what I'll do
It makes no difference what I do without you

'Cause I love you my darling
But I'll try to let you be

Goodbye it's the last you'll hear of me
Goodbye it's the last you'll hear of me

Overall Meaning

The Secret Sisters' song "The One I Love Is Gone" is a heart-wrenching ballad about lost love and the desperation that comes with it. The lyrics explore the singer's feelings of uncertainty and despair as she tries to come to terms with the fact that the person she loves is no longer in her life. The repeated refrain of "I don't know where I'll go or what I'll do" emphasizes the sense of aimlessness and futility that comes with such a loss.

However, despite her deep love for this person, the singer knows she must try to let them go. The line "But I'll try to let you be" suggests that the relationship may have ended due to irreconcilable differences or perhaps even betrayal. Despite the pain and heartache she feels, the singer realizes that it's time to say goodbye and move on. The repetition of "Goodbye it's the last you'll hear of me" reinforces this sense of finality and closure.

The imagery of the bluebird on a mountainside is particularly poignant, representing the hope and beauty that still exist in the world even in the midst of personal tragedy. The little bird's songs serve as a reminder that life goes on, even when we feel like we can't go on ourselves. Ultimately, "The One I Love Is Gone" is a powerful reflection on the pain of losing someone we love, and the difficult journey of healing and moving on that follows.

"The One I Love Is Gone"

I don't know, I don't know
Where I'll go or what I'll do
It makes no difference
What I'll do without you

Oh, I love you, my darling
But I'll try and let you be
Goodbye, it's the last
You'll hear of me

Well, I found a bluebird
High on a mountain side
And the little bird
Would sing its little song

So I'll sigh, I'll cry
I'd even wanna die
For the one I love is gone

Well, I found a bluebird
High on a mountain side
And the little bird
Would sing its little song

So I'll sigh, I'll cry
I'd even wanna die
For the one I love has gone

Modest and honest! It's great to see a mainstream act not pushing sex down my throat. Their beauty comes from their vocal and musical talent and modesty, not from being scantily clad or looking like a make up plastered Barbie doll. They let the music do the talking. Their talent is enough; it speaks for itself. I hope they keep making records. I would love to hear them cover some of George Jones's ballads.

These girls are so talented! I don't know why they are not getting more attention from the music industry!

It's so refreshing to know that there is still some REAL talent out there in the music industry. These girls sing songs that you can ACTUALLY understand the words to! The young so called "talent" we have now days can not really sing. They just scream the words into the mic. Good job girls!! Bravo for bringing back what music is all about.

Harmonies that bring goosebumps, the Carter Sisters are back!, I bought this off Itunes when I heard it on our local NPR station 2 weeks back. It's a great twist using modern country instrumentation on a Bill Monroe tune.
