You Don't Own Me Anymore
The Secret Sisters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What am I still fighting for?
You don't own me anymore
Why am I still crying?
You gotta lot of nerve
Staking a claim on me
Taking my heart away
That in a lovesick blur
All of the perfect words
She would belong to you
You would belong to her
Now I learned my lesson
Love is not possession
You don′t own me anymore
What am I still fighting for?
You don't own me anymore
Why am I still crying?
My head and my heart seem to never agree
'Cause my head knows it′s best that you set me free
My heart says that nothing will satisfy me
After so many years, so many tears
Your love is serial
All of my sympathy
To the poor victim the
Lover who follows me
One more admonition
Your new requisition
So, when she fills my place
And when her love grows deep
Remember this, my dear
She isn′t yours to keep
And you don't own me anymore
Nothing left worth fighting for
No, you don′t own me anymore
Why am I still crying?
The Secret Sisters' song "You Don't Own Me Anymore" is a powerful anthem that speaks to the pain and heartache that comes from being in a possessive relationship - and the strength required to break free. The lyrics suggest that the singer has finally found the courage to leave a controlling partner, but is still struggling to let go of the emotional baggage that comes with it. She questions why she is still crying and what she is fighting for, indicating that although she has taken the first step towards independence, she must still face the aftermath of a destructive relationship.
The lyrics are full of references to possession and ownership, highlighting the toxic nature of the relationship that the singer has escaped. The line "Love is not possession" is a clear indication that the singer has finally realized that the controlling behavior of her partner does not equate to love. Throughout the song, she challenges the idea of ownership in relationships, reminding her former partner that she is not a possession to be claimed and controlled. The line "She isn't yours to keep" is a powerful reminder that love should never be about possessing or controlling another person.
Overall, the song is a powerful statement of independence and liberation from a toxic relationship. It speaks to the resilience required to break free from a possessive partner, and the lingering emotional scars that may remain even after the relationship has ended.

YES!!!! I could listen to this whole album over and over all day (and have!). It's almost unsettling how wonderful their harmonies are! I think sometimes people who do you wrong are indirectly doing you a favor because you can be fueled to do really great things once you realize how much better off you are without their baggage weighing you down. To me, that's what this song is about. You go, Sisters!
