Gloria
The Shadows of Knight Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like to tell you 'bout my baby
You know she comes around
She 'bout five feet-four
A-from her head to the ground
Know she comes around here
Just about midnight
Make me feel so good
She make me feel all right

And her name is G-L-O-I-I-I-I
G-L-O-R-I-A
Gloria!
G-L-O-R-I-A
Gloria!
I'm gonna shout it all night
Gloria!
I'm gonna shout it every place
Gloria!
Yeah, yeah, yeah

She comes around here
Just about midnight
She make me feel so good
I want to say she make me feel all right
Comes walkin' down my street
Why don't you come up to my house?
Knock upon my door
And then she call out my name
That made me feel all right

G-L-O-R-I-A
Gloria!
G-L-O-R-I-A
Gloria!
I'm gonna shout it all night
Gloria!
I'm gonna shout it every place
Gloria!
Yeah, yeah, yeah
It's so good
Gloria!
It's all right
It's so good

Gloria!
It's all right, wow

Overall Meaning

The Shadows of Knight's song "Gloria" tells the story of a young man who has fallen in love with a woman named Gloria. He describes her as five feet four inches tall, and when she comes around at midnight, she makes him feel good and all right. He repeats her name several times throughout the song, spelling it out in a distinctive way, and even shouts it all night and every place. The song ends with the singer encouraging Gloria to come up to his house, knock on his door, and call out his name.

The song is known for its infectious energy and catchy melody, as well as its simple and repetitive lyrics. It has become a classic of garage rock and has been covered by numerous bands over the years, including The Doors, Patti Smith, and U2. Some interpret the song as being about sexual desire or even drug use, while others see it simply as a celebration of young love and lust. Regardless of its deeper meaning, "Gloria" continues to be a beloved and iconic song nearly 60 years after its release.

here it is 2022, and after all these years I get knocked out again by this great song/band. time doesn't change greatness

@debraweaver6308

It surely does NOT!!!

@stereomusicchannel818

Such an underrated version of Gloria

@charlieperkins138

This is the definitive version as far as I’m concerned

@brandonhendrix7223

Underrated? It was actually a bigger hit than Them's original.

No , Not Underrated ! People whom have no true appreciation for music & just accept some sods worthless opinion cause he held a microphone ........... They don't appreciate groups & songs like this one. I lived as young teenager when this song came out & everyone was singing it in almost every music performance center. The Beatles chose The Shadows as a result of Gloria's success as Beatles warm up band at some of the biggest venues in Britain while Beatles were at peak of their popularity. Gloria was not underappreciated by the people whom actually heard the song at its debut ! When played at The Cellar Club in Arlington Heights , Illinois , everyone went wild & you couldn't fit one more person in the club or even the parking lot where youngn's were testing the shock absorbers on their vehicles .............. @RouesMusic

@@WilliamRNicholsonLST-1195 Thanks for the info. I still liked Them's version a bit more back then and still do.

@brentwerner6103

In Chicago it's not. I heard this version as a kid in the 80s. I didn't hear the Them version until 10 years ago
