Pusher
The Shapeshifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't talk
Won't need
Tight eyes
Can't see
No rest
Can't sleep
My heart feels weak
I have the tendency to totally depend on you, they're right
I know I need to give it up
I have the tendency to totally depend on you, they're right
I know I need to give it up

Push up all my love
Push up all my love
I can't get enough
Push up all my love

Flows through my blood
What you give
Baby, I can't get enough
I'm hooked
All tied up
Aching and waiting for your tender touch

I have the tendency to totally depend on you, they're right
I know I need to give it up
I have the tendency to totally depend on you, they're right
I know I need to give it up

Push up all my love
Push up all my love
I can't get enough
Push up all my love

Push up all my love
Hungry for that drug
I can't get enough
Push up all my love

Push up, push up, push up all my love
Push up, push up, push up all my love
Push up, push up, push up all my love
Push up, push up, push up all my love

Push up all my love
Push up all my love
I can't get enough
Push up all my love

Push up all my love
Hungry for that drug
I can't get enough
Push up all my love

Just keep on pushing that love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Shapeshifters’ song Pusher describe the intense addiction one can have for another person. The singer is so dependent on their lover that they can’t talk, sleep, or even see properly without them. They are in a state of perpetual longing and waiting for their lover's touch, which makes them feel complete. However, they know that this dependence is not healthy, as they acknowledge that they need to “give it up”. The chorus reinforces this desire to break free from the addiction and dependence, but the singer also recognizes that they can’t get enough of the drug that is their lover’s love.

The lyrics can be interpreted as a commentary on the dangers of addiction, whether it be to drugs or to a person. The intense feelings the singer experiences due to their lover can be seen as similar to the high that an addict feels when they are under the influence of drugs. It’s a feeling of being out of control and unable to resist the pull of something that harms them. The chorus can also be seen as a metaphor for the cycle of addiction, where the addict knows that they should give up the drug, but they can’t resist the pull of its effects.

Overall, Pusher is a poignant reflection on the complexities of addiction to love and how it can be just as consuming and dangerous as any other form of addiction.
