The unique concept of hard, tight surf-rock and the sincere, rancid and sensitive Dutch lyrics - mostly about drinking - ensured very successful career within their homebase of West-Friesland. During the years, the band gained popularity and fans throughout the rest of the Netherlands. Their most famous songs are Cor de Moordenaar en Halvarine (Gatverdamme), from the album Poesiealbum.
In 2006 the Shavers decided to quit due to the worsening of singer Johannes' rheumatism. After a farewell concert in October 2006, it took Johannes 3 years to recover from several operations. Their mini cd Orthopedia is dedicated to the disease and Johannes' recovery. During the most of 2009 and 2010 the band again toured the country, welcomed by their fans.
Alas, in May 2011, the story of the Shavers came to a definite end. Guitarist Cock had been diagnosed with lethal throat cancer, so the band could simply not continue. A final, emotional farewell concert took place at de Waerdse Tempel, marking the end of one of the most remarkable Dutch rock(abilly) bands.

Alcohol
The Shavers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm finally through with you
It's too late to go home early
And the crowd is thin and fast
I swear to God the next drink I take
It's gonna be my last
Still not over you
I've gotta find me a better chaser
To chase away these blues
Last call for alcohol
I'm finally through with you
My hung head tung bed good for nothing
A little ? might saw through
Tryna drink you out of my mind
Was more than I could do
Last call for alcohol
I'm finally through with you
They say I can keep on drinking
I just can't do it here
But I drunk myself from sober
To a-crying in my bed
Is it a lover or a liver
I really need the most?
I'm tired of thinking with the wrong head
This will be my final toast
Last call for alcohol
I'm finally through with you
My hung head tung bed good for nothing
A little ? might saw through
Tryna drink you out of my mind
Was more than I could do
Last call for alcohol
I'm finally through with you
The Shavers' song 'Alcohol' is a song about being at the end of a toxic relationship and using alcohol to cope with the pain. The first line of the chorus, 'last call for alcohol, I'm finally through with you,' reveals that the singer is done with this relationship and is ready to move on. But, the second line in the chorus, 'my hung head, tongue-tied, good for nothing, a little love might saw through,' reveals that the singer is struggling to let go and find closure.
The verses explore the idea that the singer is using alcohol as a crutch to deal with the heartbreak. The lines 'it's too late to go home early, and the crowd is thin and fast' and 'I've gotta find me a better chaser, to chase away these blues' suggest that the singer is out at a bar trying to drink their problems away. But, the lines 'tryna drink you out of my mind was more than I could do' and 'I'm tired of thinking with the wrong head, this will be my final toast' show that the alcohol isn't helping and the singer is ready to move on from both the relationship and their reliance on alcohol.
Overall, 'Alcohol' is a poignant and relatable track that captures the struggle of letting go of a toxic relationship and using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with the pain.
