Half A Million
The Shins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I make myself a promise
Then break it every night
I'm feeling loose and life don't make no sense
I use my brains to build a fence
'Round the claim I stake
I take the drugs but the drugs won't take

I took a pledge to grow up
Then drank enough to make me throw up
On all my dearly disappointed friends
I'm just too lazy to make amends
With you anyway
That's why the pattern still remains

There's half a million things that I'm supposed to be
A shelter in the nighttime
A punk running free
And if it gets too deep
I reach for my guitar
And if I try hard

I find something I can really drop into
And everything that was is just a thing that I can sing
Everything is something next to nothing
As crazy as it seems, you give it up and you are free

Another candle to blow out
New set of dark thoughts to shut out
And everybody's got their remedies
But nothing works like chemistry
So raise a toast
No more sipping from the fire hose

There's half a million things that I'm supposed to be
A shelter in the nighttime
A punk running free
And if it gets too deep
I reach for my guitar
And if I try hard

I find something I can really drop into
And everything that was is just a thing that I can sing
Everything is something next to nothing
As crazy as it seems, you give it up and you are free

There's half a million things that you're supposed to be
A virgin in the moonlight
A freak on the scene
And if it gets too deep
You reach for your guitar
And if you try hard

There's half a million things that I'm supposed to be
A shelter in the nighttime
A punk running free
And if it gets too deep
I reach for my guitar
And if I try hard

There's half a million things that I'm supposed to be
A shelter in the nighttime
A punk running free
And if it gets too deep

I reach for my guitar
And if I try hard

Overall Meaning

The Shins's song Half A Million is a reflection on the struggle to live up to expectations and being true to oneself. The lyrics revolve around the singer's failed attempts to stay committed to himself and his goals. He makes promises to himself but ends up breaking them every night. He is lost and life doesn't make sense to him. Though he tries to keep himself focused by building a fence around the claim he stakes, it doesn't help. He takes drugs, but they don't alleviate his problems.

The singer then discusses the various things he's supposed to be - a shelter in the nighttime, a punk running free, etc. He uses his guitar to find something to drop into, and everything that was becomes a thing that he can sing. It's a cathartic process that helps the singer to deal with his problems. He acknowledges that everyone has their own remedies, but nothing works like chemistry. He raises a toast to give up all expectations, which sets him free.

The song suggests that it's futile to try to live up to all the things that people expect of us. Being free means giving up on those expectations and finding ways to be true to oneself. The singer's guitar provides him with the carefree life he seeks, even if it's for a little while.
