Everybody Loves a Lover
The Shirelles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody loves a lover
I'm a lover, everybody loves me
Anyhow, that's how I feel
Wow, I feel just like a Pollyanna

I should worry, not for nothin'
Everybody loves me, yes they do
And I love everybody
Since I fell in love with you

Who's the most popular personality?
I can't help thinkin' it's no one else but me
Gee, I feel just about ten feet tall, havin' a ball
Guess ya might call me a Pollyanna

Everybody loves a lover

I should worry, not for nothin'
Everybody loves me, yes they do
And I love everybody
Since I fell in love with
Fell in love with
Fell in love with you

(Call me a Pollyanna, do)

Overall Meaning

The Shirelles's song "Everybody Loves a Lover" speaks to the immense joy and self-assurance that loving and being loved brings. The singer expresses confidence in their popularity, asserting that everybody loves them because they are a lover, and this sense of being valued makes them feel like Pollyanna. The reference to Pollyanna, a character from a children's book who sees the good in everything, suggests that the singer is overly optimistic about their place in the world, but that is not going to stop them from enjoying the feeling of being loved.

The lyrics convey a sense of carefree living, and the singer seems to have no worries, living in the moment, and enjoying life to the fullest. They express that they should not worry, for everybody loves them, and they love everybody in return. The song suggests that love can be all-consuming, bringing joy and confidence to those who experience it. The question, "Who's the most popular personality?" is answered with the singer believing that they are the most popular. The use of exaggeration and hyperbole emphasizes their confidence and self-assurance in their popularity.

Not their best effort, but then Doris Day, I mean to say - hard to beat. This Shirelles version makes it more or less their own, with that brassy 'I Know' shuffling beat to snap it along. Class.
Slide it right in there between 'Chains', 'Zip-A-Dee Do-Dah', 'Don't Hang Up' and 'Tell Him' then you've got the 1963 floor full with the kids all dancing.
A nice strong line there, two up, two back, turn and away we go ..
