Foolish Little Girl
The Shirelles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You broke his heart and made him cry
And he's been blue since then
Now he's found somebody new
And you want him back again

Foolish little girl, fickle little girl
You didn't want him when he wanted you
He's found another love, it's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do

But I love him
No you don't it's just your pride that's hurt
I still love him
If you got him back again
You'd go right out and do him dirt

Foolish little girl, fickle little girl
You didn't want him when he wanted you
He's found another love, it's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do

But I love him
It's too late to have a change of heart
I still love him
Tomorrow is his wedding day and you'll keep quiet if you're smart

Foolish little girl, fickle little girl
You didn't want him when he wanted you
He's found another love, it's her he's dreaming of
And there's not a single thing that you can do (But I love him)

Forget him cause he don't belong to you

It's too late he's found somebody new
There's not a single thing that you can do

Overall Meaning

The Shirelles's song Foolish Little Girl is a heartbreaking story of a woman who took her lover for granted and lost him to another woman. The lyrics describe a situation where the woman, who had previously broken her lover's heart, suddenly realizes that she wants him back after he has found another love. She is now torn between her desire to have him back and her recognition that it's too late for her to change things.

The lyricist, responsible for writing this story, is warning this woman and others like her against being foolish and fickle. He points out that one cannot play with someone's feelings and expect to have them back after going through the pain of losing them.

The song is a testament to the power of love and the consequences of taking it for granted. It is a reminder that it's essential to cherish the people you love and not to let pride and foolishness get in the way of true love.

Love it. So haunting, so beautiful. Love the 'answer' girl's sweetness and sadness in losing the guy she loved. "I still love him." But the accusers on how she treated him: "If you got him back again, you'd go right out and do him dirt!" One of the funniest but truest lines in this song--or of any song. Followed by the coup d' grace to her plans: "Tomorrow is his wedding day, and you'll keep quiet if you're smart!" Hilarious, and brilliantly written and performed. IMO, The Shirelles didn't get any better than this song, but I'm sure others have their favorite Shirelles song that isn't this one. This was the last of The Shirelles big hits, topping the Billboard Hot 100 at #4, the title track of their album with the same name.
From 1:48 to the end is simply superb songwriting and singing, in one of the greatest endings of any '60s song:

"You didn't want him when he wanted you-ooh-ooh!"
He's found another love, it's her he's dreaming of.
And there's not a single thing that you can do!"
"But I love him!"
Forget him, 'cause he don't belong to you!"
"I still love him!"
It's too late, he's found somebody new."
"You know I love him!"
"There's not a single thing that you can do."
"I really love him!"
"Forget him, 'cause he don't belong to you..."

I still love this song and still listen to it. Thanks to your grandmother.

Your grandmother was Helen Miller, a Brill Building songwriter and publisher for Aldon Music, later known as Screen Gems/Columbia Music Publishing in May 1963 when Don Kirshner sold the publishing company to Columbia Pictures and hired Lester Sill to run Colpix Records after Phil Spector fired him from Philles Records. Interesting. Your grandmother's best song next to "Foolish Little Girl" was "You're My Baby (And Don't You Forget It") co-composed with Steve Venet and Pam Sawyer. Fascinating info.

Many people think the generation would never know music like this. I'm 16, and I'm in love with oldies like Clarence Carter, The Shirelles, The Stylistics, etc. I love music no matter what genre it is.
