The Passion of Lovers
The Shroud Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That were hers to keep
And in her fear
She sought cracked pleasures
The passion of lovers is for death said she
Licked her lips
And turned to feather
And as I watched from underneath
I came aware of all that she keep
The little foxes so safe and sound
They were not dead
They'd gone to ground
The passion of lovers is for death said she
The passion of lovers is for death
The passion of lovers is for death said she
The passion of lovers is for death
She breaks her heart
Just a little too much
And her jokes attract the lucky bad type
As she dips and wails
And slips her banshee smile
She gets the better of the bigger to the letter
The passion of lovers is for death said she
The passion of lovers is for death
The passion of lovers is for death said she
The passion of lovers is for death
The passion of lovers is for death said she
The passion of lovers is for death
The passion of lovers is for death said she
The Shroud's song "The Passion of Lovers" is a mysterious and evocative piece, with lyrics that hint at dark and dangerous desires. The first verse describes a woman with "nut painted arms," suggesting that she is marked or tainted in some way. Despite her fear, she seeks out "cracked pleasures," perhaps suggesting that she is drawn to things that are taboo, forbidden, or even dangerous. The chorus declares that "the passion of lovers is for death," suggesting that love and passion are intertwined with the darker aspects of life - including death.
In the second verse, we see the woman in action, breaking hearts and attracting the "lucky bad type" with her banshee smile. She dips and wails, slipping into a darker and more dangerous world, but ultimately comes out on top, getting the better of "the bigger to the letter." The chorus repeats once again, emphasizing the idea that passion and love are inextricably linked to death and danger.
Overall, the lyrics to "The Passion of Lovers" suggest a fascination with the darker side of life, including death, danger, and taboo desires. The woman at the center of the song seems to embrace this darkness, seeking out pleasures that are both thrilling and frightening. The use of words like "nut painted" and "banshee" help to create an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue, leaving the listener to wonder about the true nature of this passionate and dangerous woman.

I like it. It's different, but also not butchered. It's better than the others. The others tried to be harder. It's better with a melancholy sound.

They say there's too much delay and echo... is that possible? No, i think not...

I like this. It sounds like Mazzy Star doing Bauhaus. I appreciate when artists do their own thing with covers instead of trying to sound just like the original, because whatβs the point of that.
Iβll be checking out more from this band.
