Trawl the Couscous Cafés
Looking for a neck to chew
And hideaway
Well, that's where I found you
Lippy and trashy
C'mon, little Betty Blue
What do you say?
'Cause I would love to be
Your Guardian Angel
Yes, I would love to be
Your number one friend
Uh-huh-huh
In the windmills of Pigalle
We raised our voices
Moi et toi special
This love disease
We looked for Bohemia
And found high prices
C'mon, mon petit godesse
Come dance with me
'Cause I would love to be
Your Guardian Angel
Yes, I would love to be
Your very close friend
'Cause I would love to be
Your Guardian Angel
Yes, I would love to be
Your number one friend
Uh-huh-huh
Uh-huh-huh
Yep, yep, 'cause I
I lost you in the night
Lost that fatal magic
We didn't even have a fight
You melted away
The cats in the Moulin crew
Trawl the Couscous Cafés
Looking for a neck to chew
On another day
'Cause I would love to be
Your Guardian Angel
Yes, I would love to be
Your very close friend
Yes, I would love to be
Your Guardian Angel
Yes, I would love to be
Your number one friend
Uh-huh-huh
Uh-huh-huh
Uh-huh-huh
Uh-huh-huh
Yeah, baby
Oh, yeah
The Silencers' song "Number One Friend" is a bittersweet love song about finding love in the midst of bohemian Paris and losing it just as quickly. The lyrics portray the singer's experience of meeting someone in a cafe in the Arab quarter of Paris (Couscous Cafés), who is described as "Lippy and trashy/C'mon, little Betty Blue." Despite their apparent lack of sophistication, the singer offers to be their "guardian angel" and "number one friend." They then explore the city together, seeking out the bohemian lifestyle but finding that it comes at a high price. In the end, the singer loses their love interest without even having a fight, and it seems that they will be left alone once again.
The song paints a vivid picture of Paris as a city of contradictions, where the Moulin crew (presumably a group of night owls or troublemakers) can be found alongside the chic establishments of Pigalle. The singer and their love interest are clearly outsiders, searching for a sense of belonging in a place that is at once enchanting and unforgiving. The melancholy tone of the song is enhanced by the repetition of the chorus, which highlights the singer's desire to be close to someone and the pain of losing them.
Overall, "Number One Friend" is a poetic song that captures the essence of youthful love and the search for identity in a captivating and complex city.

The silencers were truly underrated, great band with great music. My husband introduced me to them back in the nineties, our kids grew up loving them as have our grandkids and this was always one of their favourites 🥰
