Review for the self-titled debut:
Hailing from Toronto, The Silk Demise offer up sensual, stripped-down trip-hop on their self-titled debut. Combining the talents of songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Bill Litshauer and lyricist/vocalist Olivia Zielinski, the band's sound falls somewhere between Massive Attack and the moody trip-hop found on Akira Yamaoka's soundtracks to the later Silent Hill games.
Blending sultry female vocals, occasional half-whispered male vocals a la Tricky, and music that emphasizes atmospheric sound with sometimes sparser melodic work, the their first, self-titled album is an extremely competent and immaculately produced blend of dark, electronic-yet-organic trip-hop with a slightly experimental slant.
Afterthought

Is it how you’re going to explode into this world
And be the envy of, well, you know
Heaven is sinking underground
Heaven is sinking under
You’re so simple
It’s more of an afterthought
It’s like a heartbeat
Except there’s no life attached to it
You take the honest
Then you deny it
You break the bones with
Your silent mind
The Silk Demise's song Afterthought is a thought-provoking song that talks about one's thoughts and what they're thinking. The song starts off by asking a question: "What is it that you're thinking?" The question serves as a gateway to the rest of the song, talking about how people view themselves in the world and how they fit in. The lyrics "Is it how you're going to explode into this world and be the envy of, well, you know?" paint a picture of someone who is striving to make something of themselves and be seen as successful in the eyes of others.
However, the song takes a darker turn when it talks about how "Heaven is sinking underground". This line suggests that the world is changing, and maybe not for the better. The following line "You're so simple, you're so sad" further emphasises this feeling of hopelessness. The chorus sings "It's more of an afterthought/ It's like a heartbeat/ Except there's no life attached to it". The lines seem to refer to how unimportant our lives can sometimes seem in the grand scheme of things. Our existence is akin to a beat, but without meaning or purpose. The final line of the song "You take the honest/ Then you deny it/ You break the bones with/ Your silent mind" talks about how one can ignore the truth and cause harm by staying quiet. Overall, The Silk Demise's Afterthought is a poignant reminder to be mindful of one's inner thoughts and to strive for honesty and transparency in our daily lives.
