Despite years of a rumored reunion, Pete Johansen officially announced that they had split up in 2013. That same year, band members Anders Thue and Stig Johansen formed the band Savn with Midnattsol singer Carmen Elise Espenæs.
The band was formed by Glenn Morten Nordbø, Arild Christensen, and Stig Johansen. They initially went under the name "Purgatory" but they soon decided to change their name to something more original. Anita Auglend and Ola Aarrestad joined the band shortly thereafter, and they recorded their first demo "All Alone" in January-February 1997.Anders Thue and Ingfrid Stensland then joined before they recorded their second demo "Silent Pain" in January 1998. Pete Johansen played violin on the demo, though he had not officially joined the band until the recording of their first full-length album "Lake of Sorrow" later in 1998. They toured across Europe, before recording their second full-length album "Perpetual Desolation" in 2000. During the following tour, Anita Auglend, Ingfrid Stensland, and Anders Thue grew weary of traveling and left the band in 2001. A live performance was released on CD and VHS in 2001, though it was not distributed worldwide and is thus very hard to come by. The band has been dormant since the departure of its three members. Pete Johansen has since left to play the violin on several Tristania albums.
The band is often compared to gothic metal bands such as Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy, mainly because of the band's combination of a female soprano voice with male death grunts; this trait is common to gothic metal in general, and is known as the "Beauty and the Beast". Their music features death metal/doom metal rhythmics enhanced by the prominent use of violins, especially on the "Lake of Sorrow" album, typical of many gothic doom metal bands. Their live recordings offer a sound closer to traditional death metal than their studio albums which make heavy use of arrangements and effects.
In 2007, it was rumored that Anita Auglend had returned to the band, although these rumors were never confirmed.
Members of the band included Glenn Morten Nordbø (guitars, vocals), Arild Christensen (guitars, vocals), Ola Aarrestad (bass), Stig Johansen (drums) , Maike Olaisen (keyboards), Anita Auglend (vocals), Ingfrid Stensland (keyboards and piano), Anders Thue (keyboards and piano), and Pete Johansen (violin).

Forever
The Sins of Thy Beloved Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
deep into the woods
we are gathered and we are back
at las the night is ours
Tonight our shadows dancing
in the light of a fire
this night is to be remembered
Tonight we are all together
tonight we all leave together
whe the darkness falls we are on our way
tonight we are all together
tonight we'll leave together
this is our dream forever
now we are leaving
In the mighty woods i wander
through the trees thou can see my shadow
by the cold wind in my skin
i behold my throne for thee my sorrow
Now the symphony plays my song
my voice thou hear in the night
i will never leave for no one else in my life
And now we are up together
and soon we'll dance forever
sing my choir let this night be remembered
Now my angel sing for the darkness
forever dancing in this cold winternight
The lyrics to The Sins of Thy Beloved's song "Forever" seem to be about a group of people gathering in a secluded location, such as in the mountains or deep in the woods, to spend a night together free from any obligations or societal pressure. They want to break free from their mundane lives and indulge in this moment to create a memory that lasts forever. Throughout the night, they dance and enjoy the warmth from the campfire. The singer seems to be in a state of emotional turmoil, where he seeks a release for his sorrow. He sings his song through the symphony of the night, and we get a sense that singing is a catharsis for him, and he feels he can let go of his pain for that moment.
The lyrics create an image of a night that's going to remain etched in the memory of the people involved. They are cognizant of the fact that this night is a fleeting moment in time that they will never experience again. By indulging in their passions, such as singing or dancing, they aim to make the most of the time they spent together. The singer seems to be yearning for someone or something throughout the song, which adds a layer of mystery to the story's narrative. The stanza where he talks about his shadow and the wind on his skin portrays a profound sense of loneliness or isolation. The overall message of the song seems to be about cherishing the moments that we spend with loved ones and making the most of them.
