Despite years of a rumored reunion, Pete Johansen officially announced that they had split up in 2013. That same year, band members Anders Thue and Stig Johansen formed the band Savn with Midnattsol singer Carmen Elise Espenæs.
The band was formed by Glenn Morten Nordbø, Arild Christensen, and Stig Johansen. They initially went under the name "Purgatory" but they soon decided to change their name to something more original. Anita Auglend and Ola Aarrestad joined the band shortly thereafter, and they recorded their first demo "All Alone" in January-February 1997.Anders Thue and Ingfrid Stensland then joined before they recorded their second demo "Silent Pain" in January 1998. Pete Johansen played violin on the demo, though he had not officially joined the band until the recording of their first full-length album "Lake of Sorrow" later in 1998. They toured across Europe, before recording their second full-length album "Perpetual Desolation" in 2000. During the following tour, Anita Auglend, Ingfrid Stensland, and Anders Thue grew weary of traveling and left the band in 2001. A live performance was released on CD and VHS in 2001, though it was not distributed worldwide and is thus very hard to come by. The band has been dormant since the departure of its three members. Pete Johansen has since left to play the violin on several Tristania albums.
The band is often compared to gothic metal bands such as Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy, mainly because of the band's combination of a female soprano voice with male death grunts; this trait is common to gothic metal in general, and is known as the "Beauty and the Beast". Their music features death metal/doom metal rhythmics enhanced by the prominent use of violins, especially on the "Lake of Sorrow" album, typical of many gothic doom metal bands. Their live recordings offer a sound closer to traditional death metal than their studio albums which make heavy use of arrangements and effects.
In 2007, it was rumored that Anita Auglend had returned to the band, although these rumors were never confirmed.
Members of the band included Glenn Morten Nordbø (guitars, vocals), Arild Christensen (guitars, vocals), Ola Aarrestad (bass), Stig Johansen (drums) , Maike Olaisen (keyboards), Anita Auglend (vocals), Ingfrid Stensland (keyboards and piano), Anders Thue (keyboards and piano), and Pete Johansen (violin).

Lake of Sorrow
The Sins of Thy Beloved Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
to hold my eyes at the lake of sorrow
???
See the shadow of my obsession
???
I feel this lost ??? away, away
In this life I feel lost for you
All those times
In your eyes
I see love and innocence
But I still I do not know
and I'm loving you
still I'm trying to touch
are you loving me
do you want to do
realize be now and dance
come on follow my words then we will fly
The lyrics of "Lake of Sorrow" by The Sins of Thy Beloved paints a picture of a love that has caused pain and sorrow. The opening lines "You burned me down, to hold my eyes at the lake of sorrow" suggest a betrayal or hurt inflicted by the person they love. The lines "See the shadow of my obsession, I feel this lost ??? away" seems to indicate that the singer is struggling with obsessive thoughts and feelings towards their loved one and are lost in it.
The singer speaks about praying for the love of their partner and how they see love and innocence in their eyes. However, there is still a sense of uncertainty and confusion that lingers within the singer. They still do not know if their partner loves them back or if they want anything to do with them. The refrain "realize me now and dance, come on follow my words then we will fly" has a certain desperation to it, as if the singer is begging their partner to acknowledge their love and be with them.
Overall, "Lake of Sorrow" is a melancholic and desperate plea of love that has caused sorrow and confusion. It speaks about the pain of unrequited love and the struggles of obsessive thoughts and feelings towards someone who may not love you back.

It's a shame this band doesn't exist anymore. Anita Auglend's voice is just mesmerizing. I would have loved to see her at least in another band making a career but it looks like she didn't anything else after living this band.
@LickeyWebster
This has been one of my (admittedly many) favorite records of all time since I first heard it in 2003 or so, and it gives me the same feeling today as it did then. The atmosphere is like no other, and Anita's vocals are a portion of that. Everyone involved with this band other than Stig, Anders, and Pete seemed to have just given up on this genre. A lot of untapped future potential, but they certainly struck while the iron was hot, and made 2 wonderful full-lengths.
Hopefully one day the sub-genre has a resurgence. Mid-late 90's Gothic Doom is so special. Cheers to Stig for never fizzling out.
@JpGame90
@LickeyWebster If you don't know but Stig made a new Gothic/Symph metal band and it's name is Mørke
@LickeyWebster
@JpGame90 I am indeed familiar with Stig's attempt to carry the traditional sound of the time, and enjoyed both Morke records. Melancholia I listened to moreso. I need to go back and hit the first one again. The same "Magic" just wasn't there from what I remember, though.Thats not a slight against the project, whatsoever, though. I'm glad he is carrying the torch!
@iruskanogueira
Essa banda é pra mim a melhor que já existiu nesse conceito de metal gótico. Até hoje escuto!! Desde meus 15 anos. Tenho 35 anos até então e ela continua me desprendendo as mesmas sensações!!!

Concordo plenamente. Grande banda

Perfeita banda, se tivessem mantido toda essa melodia e brutalidade sonora, hoje em dia com certeza seria a melhor de todas..
