The group has released three original studio albums: First and Last and Always (1985), Floodland (1987), and Vision Thing (1990). Each album was recorded by a different line-up; singer-songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machine called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity throughout. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members.
The Sisters of Mercy ceased recording activity in the early 1990s, when they went on strike against East West Records, whom they accused of incompetence and withholding royalties, and had pressured the group to release at least two more studio albums; instead, the label released the album Go Figure under the moniker SSV in 1997. Although the Sisters of Mercy were eventually released from their contract with East West, they have never been signed to another label nor released any new material, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets.
Former members of the group established the bands Ghost Dance and The Mission.

I get sometimes
A feeling
Sometimes
And I get frightened
Just like you
I get frightened too
but it's...
(no no no) No time for heartache
(no no no) No time to run and hide
(no no no) No time for breaking down
(no no no) No time to cry
Sometimes in the world as is you've
Got to shake the hand that feeds you
It's just like Adam says
It's not so hard to understand
It's just like always coming down on
Just like Jesus never came and
What did you expect to find
It's just like always here again it's...
(no no no) No time for heartache
(no no no) No time to run and hide
(no no no) No time for breaking down
(no no no) No time to cry
Everything will be alright
Everything will turn out fine
Some nights I still can't sleep
And the voices pass with time
And I keep
[repeat]
No time to run and hide
No time to be afraid of fear
I keep no time to cry
(no no no) No time for heartache
(no no no) No time to run and hide
(no no no) No time for breaking down
(no no no) No time to cry
The Sisters of Mercy's song "No Time to Cry" is a powerful expression of fear, anxiety, and the need to keep moving forward. The song's opening lines reveal that the singer sometimes experiences intense feelings that frighten them. However, they quickly reassure the listener that they are not alone in this experience, comforting them by acknowledging that they too get frightened sometimes. The fear the singer experiences seems to come from a sense that life is fleeting and unpredictable, and that there is "no time" to waste on heartache, running and hiding, breaking down, or crying.
The song continues with references to the biblical story of Adam and the fall, as well as to Jesus and his absence from the world. The lyrics suggest that life is full of disappointments and that one must learn to accept and deal with them. The refrain is a repetition of the opening lines, emphasizing the need to keep moving forward and not get bogged down by negative emotions. The final lines offer a hopeful message that everything will be alright and that the voices of fear and anxiety will eventually fade away.
Overall, "No Time to Cry" is a powerful and cathartic expression of the human condition. It acknowledges the reality of fear, anxiety, and disappointment, while also offering comfort and hope to the listener. The song's refusal to wallow in negative emotions and its emphasis on the need to keep moving forward make it a powerful anthem for anyone facing difficult circumstances.
