After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only.

The group has released three original studio albums: First and Last and Always (1985), Floodland (1987), and Vision Thing (1990). Each album was recorded by a different line-up; singer-songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machine called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity throughout. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members.

The Sisters of Mercy ceased recording activity in the early 1990s, when they went on strike against East West Records, whom they accused of incompetence and withholding royalties, and had pressured the group to release at least two more studio albums; instead, the label released the album Go Figure under the moniker SSV in 1997. Although the Sisters of Mercy were eventually released from their contract with East West, they have never been signed to another label nor released any new material, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets.

Former members of the group established the bands Ghost Dance and The Mission.

@M I didn't have sex but I had a really weird experience. I was dancing on my own at Slimelight and this couple were dancing a good two places further over to the edge of the dance floor. Then Temple of Love came on and it was as if the girl and I were connected by a rope that got shorter and shorter. We danced in circles around each other like two planets until we were chest to chest with her leaning backwards. The words :

A Sisters of Mercy concert back in the 90's was one of the best and at the same time utterly terrifying moments in my life. Such a welcome change from all the smiley day-glo stuff at the time. I will always get a buzz remembering the live version of this song. I still have the tinnitus and long black leather jacket I bought the next week.

Back in the day, spoiled by an onslaught of top grade alternative rock music, we took tracks like this one for granted... the DJ's next mix would trump the previous one and on that went till "last call" when we would all rush to the bar for one final beer. I feel like an idiot for not seeing this sooner. I don't know what video I've been watching, but this version is absolutely perfect. The Sisters of Mercy, stand among the "Goth Pantheon", with Peter Murphy, Christian Death, Siouxie & The Banshees, Dead Can Dance, Joy Division, Xmal Deutschland, and The Cocteau Twins -- there are simply to many to list them all.

This song hits me with a tsunami of good Goth memories. Specifically, when my friends met another "murder" of Goth's in Santa Cruz, California. My buddy Rom said to one guy, "Cool Sister of Mercy shirt" so, we decided hang out together and smoke pot (laced with PCP, later I discovered); but, for a spontaneous reason, this really cute "devil in a black dress" and I decided to climb a mast-cross from a sailing ship. It was erected in the memory of missing and dead sailor's, but we got the perfect picture.

Later, I married the same girl, so 28 years we still share our "black ♥ hearts" in our own -- Temple of Love.

I know some people might protest, but it's no different than dancing in a cemetery.

My life changed, in '83 when I first heard the original of this, at 16. I took a sharp turn, to the left (I think?) and never looked back. Thing is, it still sounds great today!

Apearance of Ofra Haza was great idea to boost already damn good song. Must confess , was fascinated then and i am now too. Such combinations of musicans from total different genres became common thing today, but back then rare exotic. Andy is a man.

One word, great song and a most beautiful one. The singer, Andrew Eldritch tells of danger and unheilverkündende Zeiten while the female singer, Ofra Haza sings like an angel. So, I think this symbiose makes what it is, one of the most beautiful love song ever written, and much importantly in the 90'ies.

Back in the 80's I was into heavy metal (Megadeth, Slayer etc..) but I remember hearing these guys and thinking; yeah, I can get into this. They led me down a whole other path :)

Only just heard the original version from 83, was too young to know about it back then but I do remember this coming out in 92,my college years and still think it's a vast improvement. Ofra Haza does a great job and makes it much more uplifting, in my opinion
