REDLIGHT
The Slackers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There beneath the morning sun
I see you walking
Smiling face for everyone
I hear you talking
To shy to call your name
And to high to play this game
I was weak in my heart that's what tore us apart
But nothing can turn back the hands of time
And nothing could ever make you mine
So keep on, keep on walking
So keep on, keep on walking

Morning turns to afternoon
And your still standing
But my morning just can't end too soon
"Why you waiting?"
To shy to call your name
And to high to play this game
All the boys that you know how they cum and they go
But your pot is boiling much too hot
And nothing but nothing can change this lot
So keep on, keep on walking
So keep on, keep on walking

Afternoon turns to evening time
And I see you dancing
Smiling face for every man,
I see you romancing
To shy to call your name
And to high to play this game
I was weak in my heart that's what tore us apart
But nothing but nothing can change my mind
And nothing can turn back the hands of time

So keep on, keep on walking
So keep on, keep on walking

Overall Meaning

The Slackers's song "Redlight" is a story told from the perspective of a lonely onlooker, who sees the person they desire walking under the morning sun. The singer is too shy to call out their crush's name or to engage them in their game. The singer narrates their inability to act upon their feelings and how that led to their drift apart. The lyrics depict the singer's hopelessness and their realization that nothing could make them agitated person's favorite.

The chorus of the song encourages the beloved to continue walking away and never look back. The singer acknowledges that their heart was weak, and they couldn't hold onto the relationship. Still, the hands of time continue to move as they accept that nothing can turn back the irreversible damage. The verse progresses to the afternoon, where the singer sees their crush still standing, not realizing the profound effect they have on the singer's life. The singer urges them forward, reiterating their reluctance to chase them down.

As evening approaches, the singer finds their beloved dancing with every man, and they realize that nothing they do can change the situation. The singer is bitter about the past and how their heart's weakness tore them apart. As the song ends, the main theme of the song continues, urging the beloved to keep walking away.

Truly fantastic album! Just learned about this band from a comment on a post of Hepcat’s Scientific album. And as a long time Hepcat fan I’ve considered that the best ska album of the 90’s without question. This is it’s equal. Pure gold
