Typical Girls
The Slits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't create

Don't rebel

Have intuition

Can't decide

Typical girls get upset too quickly

Typical girls can't control themselves

Typical girls are so confusing

Typical girls, you can always tell

Typical girls don't think too clearly

Typical girls are unpredictable, predictable

Typical girls try to be

Typical girls very well

Typical girls try to be

Typical girls very well, well

Typical girls are looking for something

Typical girls fall under spells

Typical girls buy magazines

Typical girls feel like hell

Typical girls worry about spots, fat

And natural smells, stinky fake smells

Typical girls try to be

Typical girls very well, well

Don't create

Don't rebel

Have intuition

Don't drive well

Typical girls try to be

Typical girls very well

Can't decide what clothes to wear

Typical girls are sensitive

Typical girls are emotional

Typical girls are cruel and bewitching

But she's a femme fatal

Typical girls stand by their man

Typical girls are really swell

Typical girls learn how to act shocked

Typical girls don't rebel

Who invented the typical girl?

Who's bringing out the new improved model?

And there's another marketing ploy

Typical girl gets the typical boy

Who invented the typical girl?

Who's bringing out the new improved model?

And there's another marketing ploy

Typical girl gets the typical boy, typical boy

The typical boy gets the typical girl

The typical girl gets the typical boy

The typical boy gets the typical girl

The typical girl gets the typical boy

Are emotional

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Slits's song "Typical Girls" deal with the societal expectations placed upon women and the challenges they face in trying to conform to those expectations. The first verse highlights the contradictory requirements placed upon women - they are expected not to create or rebel, but to have intuition, while also struggling with indecisiveness. The chorus discusses the stereotypes that women face, being seen as easily upset, confusing, and unpredictable, while also focusing on appearance concerns like spots, fat, and natural smells. The second verse highlights how women are expected to excel at being "typical girls," but also fall under societal pressures that lead to anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed.

The song's bridge challenges the notion of the "typical girl," questioning who created this stereotype and why it is perpetuated. The lyrics suggest that it is a marketing ploy to sell a certain image to women and to promote a certain type of relationship between men and women. The final refrain suggests that the typical boy and typical girl are conditioned to expect one another and fit into specific roles.

Overall, the song highlights the constraints placed upon women in society and the pressure to conform to expected roles and behaviors. It critiques the way women are marketed to and sold an image that they are expected to strive towards, while also highlighting the difficulties that arise in trying to fit into this mold.

They really didn’t realize how brilliant they were. Up there with Joe, Mick, Topper, and Paul. The layers on Typical Girls… are emotional.

Currently reading Viv Albertine's book... these girls were wild and I love them! Total trailblazers, it couldn't have been easy to do this in the 70s.

@timneave3240

One of the great singles, but also what a delightful bit of film.

“Cut” is a great album. The lyrics are genius. Funny and real. I saw this video on MuchMusic nearly 40 years ago and it’s still as fresh and exhilarating as it was back then.

@MrBigSkizz

Totally agree I love it. Fits in well with other late 70s bands like Pere Ubu and Television.

@HaveSumn_2Loose

Ari's hat in this one reminds me of back In the day,, my punk friends & I used to go to any lengths/ways to get anything but the "Norm" clothes/accessories/etc. to express ourselves/look/personal style choices & Ari's hat makes me think of when Burger King employees work uniforms included the big red & yellow "Jiffy-Pop" hats & jackets,, I would be the very first (in my town/or had ever seen anyone) to go to work at Burger King,, wait till I got my uniform & then quit,, just to have the hat & jacket 🤪
