Augustine
The Slow Show Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
These tears won't wipe away.
Please send me home today.
Keep these sheets on they say.
Oh, Augustine,
They're calling me,
They're calling me!
Oh, Augustine,
Oh, Augustine!
Oh, Augustine!
I'm crying blood again.
But these tears won't wipe away.
Please send me home today.
Keep these sheets on they say.
Oh, Augustine,
They're calling me,
They're calling me!
Oh, Augustine,
Please keep me clean,
Oh, Augustine!
Oh, Augustine!
This time's a very bad time for the two of us, no?
So you gotta let me go, go, go ...
Go, go, go ...
This time's a very bad time for the two of us, no?
So you gotta let me go, go, go ...
Go, go, go ...
Oh, Augustine!
The lyrics of The Slow Show's song Augustine suggest a plea for redemption and salvation. The opening line, "I'm crying blood again", can be interpreted as a metaphor for deep emotional pain and suffering. The singer is feeling overwhelmed and helpless, and the tears won't wipe away, indicating a deep-rooted and unspoken sadness. The repeated phrase, "Please send me home today", can be interpreted as a request for a way out, a desire to escape the pain and find peace. The line "Keep these sheets on they say" suggests the singer is in some sort of hospital or care facility, possibly dealing with addiction or mental illness.
The repetition of "Oh, Augustine" throughout the song suggests that the singer is calling out to a saint or a higher power for help and guidance. Augustine was a Christian theologian and philosopher who believed in the ideas of original sin and redemption. The line "Please keep me clean" may suggest that the singer is seeking forgiveness but feels unworthy. The final lines suggest a sense of resignation, as if the singer has come to terms with the fact that they must leave or let go of something in order to find peace.

YESS, love the rhythmic drums in combination with the lyric brass harmonies... Great vocals by Rob Goodwin! Anxiously waiting to see them live again in Nijmegen, after a stunning and intimate performance on a rooftop in Rotterdam

I just love The Slow Show - but how could you make the German TV Noir version you did of Augustine 10x better than the studio cut?? That version needs release pronto - like yesterday. It's a classic on it's own..
